I [31F] have been on three dates with a guy who I felt a strong connection with. He seemed very interested at first--quickly scheduled the next date after the first, has met me in locations way more convenient for me than him, sending good morning texts, etc. Between dates two and three, things really died down. For date three, it pretty much only happened because I suggested it and mentioned that I was going to be out of town for two weeks. During date three, it was clear that he was enjoying our time together and for the two days that followed, he was more responsive through text. Now things have died down again. I also know that he recently went on a date with someone else.

We haven't slept together and even though I can tell he's clearly attracted to me, I don't feel like he's looking for just sex. If I had to guess what's going on, there's an impulsive side of him that enjoys being with me and a more rational side that sees something about me as incompatible or not long term relationship material.

Is a total lack of even momentum usually a sign that the relationship isn't going to go anywhere? If he stops reaching out, I'll stop reciprocating, but I also don't want to end up in a situation where I become a placeholder until he finds someone else.
