She never claimed to be dating an RP man. Most of us aren't.

No idea who is upvoting this, it isn't an RP comment at all.

I wouldn't marry a man who made me get rid of my animals.

This is the Red Pill Woman subreddit, where we love and respect the men in our lives. Your comment is at odds with our values from the very first sentence. Are you telling the OP not to marry this man because he is making her get rid of the dog? That is not the right attitude to bring to this thread. She is already engaged, she has made a serious commitment and has been committed thus far. You seem to be ignoring the consequences of any action she may take as a result of her negative emotions.

It is true that we allow men to have the authority in a relationship, however, we also have the power to choose who we give ourselves over to.

A point of clarification: we don't "allow" men to have authority in a relationship, we are attracted to men who naturally have authority and trust them to make the best decisions in a relationship. The OP has already made her choice. She is engaged. She has decided who she is giving herself over to, and now, she needs to trust his decision on this dog issue, as well as all future issues that may pop up.

A non-animal lover is a non-starter for me, and I married someone who explicitly was on the same page with me in that regard.

Great, good for you. How does this help the OP?

Think carefully if you want a life without animals. Giving up an animal who has already bonded to you is just cruel

Why are you elevating animals to the point where they take precedence over humans, especially over the man who is soon to be the husband of the OP? You realise that this dog will adapt to its new environment right? It will move on and enjoy its life. It does not view this situation as cruel, you are blowing things way out of proportion. Animals are not people. And, at the end of the day, her husband outranks anyone anyways. She should be thinking about whether or not she wants a life without her fiance, because her inability to handle his decision making is alarming and definitely a red flag. Seriously, how hard is it to choose between a dog and your fiance? If that question makes anyone pause then they need to rethink their priorities.

not indicative of any kind of man I'd want anything to do with.

Stop villainising her fiance for having different preferences than you. She obviously wants something to do with him because she has been in a relationship long enough that she knows that marriage is the next step. Your entire comment is disrespectful to him and their relationship. An RP response would not advocate for her to leave and/or remain stubborn.

Thank you so much. I thought I was the crazy one when I saw all these "you dump him gurl" posts. Seems like most of the actual RPW agree with me. I guess the post just got brigaded. Maybe I'm not so crazy. :)

[–]Camille11325 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Haha no you're not crazy :) It was great to see all the actual RPW (and Soft Harem!) on the same page with this one.

Honestly, I hope we got brigaded. I don't want to think that so many of our own members were so quick to give and support non RP advice. Looking at the responses before they were removed, you would have thought we were in AskWomen; everyone was on Team Woman/Dog it was ridiculous.

[–]FleetingWishEndorsed Contributor 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's just appalling. I thought the hierarchy of sympathy to a blue pillar was woman > child > man. Apparently it's woman > child > dog > man. Sad.

If I had to guess, I would put it at:

female human (any age) > Cute animal > male child > hypothetical person > man > spider

A lot of people are making this about the dog instead of answering your actual question. I know I could not just "get over it" because I LOVE animals and wouldn't have reached the commitment stage with someone who wouldn't keep pets. But the fact that you tried to talk him out of getting a dog clearly displays that animals are not as important to you as they are to many of the previous commenters basically encouraging you to leave your fiancé.

There are plenty of people who have already brought up that this is a red flag as far as his decision making skills go, so while I agree that it's concerning I am going to go forward with the assumption that an impulsive decision like this is out of character for him and not indicative of a larger problem and actually try to address your question. It can be hard when our captains make decisions that are hurtful to us, but it is going to happen from time to time. What makes us happy is not always what's really best for us and our captains have to make the tough calls sometimes.

Frankly it sounds like your emotions surrounding this situation are clouding the way you have portrayed things. This description alone makes your fiancé sound quite callous, but if you are already engaged to him I doubt that is truly the case. You have to remember that everyone makes mistakes. He had the best of intentions in getting a dog, but he bit off more than he could chew. He is giving the dog to his uncle who I am sure he knows well and trusts; he isn't just dumping the dog on the side of the road or giving it to the pound to be euthanized. Emotionally I think it will feel good to go and visit the dog and see the great new life he is living, and your fiancé has made sure that can happen for you. Just keep reminding yourself that he made a very human error but is now trying to rectify it the best way he knows how. There is surely a reason he gave the dog to a family member rather than the pound.

I may be biased, but I can at least offer a biased perspective from the other side. I strongly dislike dogs. That being said, it's hard for me to understand the concept of someone having to choose between their love of their life, and their pet, and choosing their pet. I mean, if this was a new relationship maybe I could understand, but this is your fiancee. You are talking about getting rid of someone who actually has the capacity to love and care for you, someone who wants to choose to be with you for the rest of your life, so that you can keep your dog? I just don't get it at all. A dog has no capacity for caring about you, nor is it able to determine whether it wants to be with you or someone else. Maybe that's why they call it man's best friend, it will never choose someone else over you... because it doesn't have the capacity to do so.

Let me get all this straight. The dog has been around for a shorter time period than him. He bought it as a gift for you, even though he hates dogs, because he wanted to try because he knew it would make you happy. And you still are considering choosing the dog? Dogs are a dime-a-dozen, they are all pretty much the same, you may never find someone like you SO.

Or maybe it's for the best. Maybe you shouldn't stay with him after all, I mean if you're considering leaving him, and breaking your promise to him, for your dog, maybe it's best you don't marry him. Women who break their promises aren't really good marriage material, and you don't seem to care about him that much anyway.

[–]SuperSlavisWifeEndorsed Contributor 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Sometimes there are hiccoughs. Generally there will be things you agree and disagree about, this just happened to be a big one that caught you by surprise. Look at the big picture. How much do pets matter to your future? Is there any way you could have the enjoyment of being around a dog without having to own one yourself? Is this just one isolated problem, or have you had similar thoughts about other problems lately?

If it's just this one thing, I'm sure you can find a workaround. My angle is that if knowing this about him didn't change your desire to get engaged, it shouldn't really change it now you've seen his dislike for animals in action. Some women here are saying they wouldn't date a man who disliked animals, but if he were such an awful match for you, you wouldn't be wearing that ring to begin with.

PS: You could always consider adopting a smaller, older dog. An animal that is quieter, needs less exercise, eats less food and is largely trained may be a compromise he's happy to make.

[–]BakerofpieEndorsed Contributor 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Some women here are saying they wouldn't date a man who disliked animals, but if he were such an awful match for you, you wouldn't be wearing that ring to begin with.

I fully agree. Those women saying they would leave over this would never have gotten to this stage in the relationship in the first place. I agree with them and I would leave myself if a man wanted me to give away my dog, but I already had a dog before meeting my husband and this matters enough to me that I would have "left him" after oh, say the third date, NOT after getting all the way to an engagement. The impulsive decision is cause for concern if and only if it seems to be something that happens frequently or there is truly reason to be believe it could be a preview of future behavior.

[–]SuperSlavisWifeEndorsed Contributor 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes. If it's an isolated incident where he bit off more than he can chew, then we all do that. But if it's in a greater context of impulsive decisions and petty dominance displays (rather than leadership displays), then it needs to be thought over. It's a matter of the marriage, not of the pet. Either way, it's best to assume the dog is going. And I say that as someone who generally loves dogs and already feels sorry for their one.

[–]BakerofpieEndorsed Contributor 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I love dogs too, so it is really hard to look at this from an unbiased perspective. Haha. But yes, it is possibly a cause for concern about future decisions, not really about this isolated incident.

No animal comes before your SO

[–]SoftHarem 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sure, if your perspective is ridiculous. She's engaged to this man and clearly wants an RP relationship, and in an RP relationship you listen to your man. No dogs. The end.

[–]StingrayVC 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Do I give that up for the rest of my life, for him?

Yes. You're sad right now and you're not thinking straight. You have pledged the rest of your life to a man and are now worried that it might be wrong, because of a dog. Look, I love dogs too and have one by my side right now. I love him dearly and I would give him up in a second for my husband.

This is the man who went out and got an animal whom he knows he would not like to help you get through a very difficult time. He's obviously good at making decisions that are out of reverence for you. Now, as your fiancé, it is his job to make decisions out of responsibility for your family, and you need to respect that.

I understand this is very hard and I am sorry for you, but this truly is best for your dog and your family. You need to respect the man who you will soon be calling husband.

Good at making decisions out of reverence for her. It was a poorly thought out decision however. My heart goes out to her as well, but it's a husband or a dog. This thread baffles my mind.

Edit: Having read more of the thread now, this whole thing is just weird. He's not alpha. He was trying to please her. Maybe he is good at making decisions and is learning from his mistakes on this one and is growing better over time. Not sure. He got the dog to help her through her grief and it's not working out.

[–]WilIjR[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Before we got the dog, he always said he wanted one of this specific breed. Now that he is getting rid of it, it's become, "Well I only kept him for you." So. I'm not really sure anymore. I think he always wanted the dog, and because my dad died it probably seemed like the perfect time to get one. It was really a mix of his desire to have a dog and a happy girlfriend, I think.

[–]BakerofpieEndorsed Contributor 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The only real question is whether decisions like this are the norm. I understand how upset you are, as I would be too. But if this behavior isn't typical it shouldn't even particularly matter if he got the dog for you or for himself. Unless this is a pattern of rash decisions and lack of follow through on commitments you are going to have to find a way to forgive him. Don't focus so much on why he got the dog in the first place or whether or not he did it for you. It was clearly a mistake, but one that anyone could make. Don't allow this one issue to take over your emotions and feel like he is doing this with bad intentions. Digging into it and trying to interpret and question his motivations in this single incident is only going to hold you back from finding a way to forgive and move past it. Accept that he made a mistake and don't allow yourself to dwell on it, or realize that he frequently makes bad decisions and backs out on commitments and reconsider getting married. There is no middle ground option.

Being "obviously good at making decisions" and being "obviously good at making decisions that are out of reverence for you" are not the same thing. She is worried that he won't be giving her any thought in his decisions making process. That is obviously not the case. Yes, he didn't think this decision through carefully enough. That is obvious. But her concern for him not thinking of her is moot.

Yeah, we find out in a later post that he wants to get rid of the dog, not because he dislikes dogs... He actually likes them. This particular dog however is poorly behaved and driving him crazy. This is the dog she wants to risk her relationship for. I don't even...

[–]WilIjR[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's not poorly behaved, for a puppy. Puppies need a lot of attention. When I'm not home, he has accidents. They don't happen when I'm home. I'm not sure if SO is ignoring him or not. He says he lets him out but I don't think he watches him to make sure he goes potty before he lets him back in. I am more so upset because of what this represents. He didn't communicate his displeasure with the dog until he was ready to give it away. That's what really irks me. I knew he wasn't as into taking care of the dog as I was, and in retrospect I should have realized he hated taking care of it even though I do most of the work. After a few months, he stopped wanting to go for walks with us. Then he didn't want to sit out on the yard with us anymore. I just thought he tired, because that's what the would say so why would I question him.

I am just really disappointed that he didn't communicate this with me until the very last minute. I don't know what I can do to ensure this doesn't happen in the future with something else.

[–]FleetingWishEndorsed Contributor 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm just really disappointed that he didn't communicate until the last minute.

That sounds like hamstering to me. You know full well that there was nothing you could do about it. It sounds to me like he didn't say anything because he was trying really hard to be ok with it, and at some point realized he just couldn't, and that's when he told you. He knew that there was nothing you could do about it, he knew it was a problem he was having, so he was trying to solve it.

You wish he would have told you earlier, so that you could... Do what exactly? What would have changed?

See you're upset because you're losing your beloved pet. This is understandable. You're only human, and you cared about that dog a great deal. But because you are grieving you are not thinking clearly, this stage of the grieving process is called "bargaining". "If only I had longer... I'd be less upset." That's really what you want right now, to be less upset about it. But, if you're honest with yourself for a second, you'd realize that knowing sooner really wouldn't help.

The hamstering happened when you did the following mental connection: "I'm upset" -> "My SO did something that made me to be upset" -> hamster -> "My SO could have done something to make me less upset" -> "My SO should have done something to make me less upset" -> "My SO didn't do anything to make me less upset, therefore he is a bad person".

You're blaming how upset you are on how your SO handled it, when really what you're upset about is the loss of the dog you loved so much. If you were really honest with yourself, you'd realize there was nothing your SO could have done to make it easier on you because you'd still be upset over losing the dog, because you're only human.

I am just really disappointed that he didn't communicate this with me until the very last minute. I don't know what I can do to ensure this doesn't happen in the future with something else.

I am calling BS on this. By your own admission you said he is fantastic and you know this is the right thing to do for you both. I think you just want to rally up some bullshit female support to prop up your delluded thinking
