I would put it differently; men are sensitive to disrespect and within men’s groups hierarchies are maintained through banter, cutting jokes, etc.

If you can just avoid teasing, sarcasm, put downs or making him the butt of a joke, you’ll already be creating a space where he feels accepted and not under threat.

The second part of this is admiration which is simply noticing and acknowledging the things he does right, well, or better than we can.

Show admiration for the work he does, even if it’s just fixing something around the house. Be receptive to learning from him, as men like to feel useful and knowledgeable. Trust his decisions and don’t micromanage everything he does or question/remind him constantly. Save face for him; if there’s something he is admitting that might feel shameful you should buffer it (e.g. “that could happen to anyone, etc”). Don’t laugh or tease if he does something wrong.

That being said, you need to vet a man properly, because there are some useless men out there who cannot lead and will fail you in a lot of these areas, so women tend to pick up the slack with these men by nagging them and controlling them. If you feel like you can’t depend on your man in the first place, you shouldn’t be with him. This advice is for the competent man who has his shit together.

Listening and being quiet goes a really long way. If you disagree, you do it calmly and carefully choose your language. I feel like 90% of respect is simply what comes out of our mouths (…or doesn’t).
