I've received good advice from this sub previously and I would appreciate your help again. I feel like I'm all over the place; I need to sort myself out in order to come to terms with this and be at peace. This will likely be a long post but I think some context is important.
I recently found out my husband cheated on me throughout the first year of our relationship. I'm not sure how much detail is necessary, so I'll just say someone contacted me with detailed information (and shared pictures), I asked him about it and he confirmed it was true. He provided additional information as well, which leads me to believe he's being honest now. He didn't carry on a relationship but had repeated sexual encounters with two other women and one ONS during this time.
I've been with him for over 7 years, since I was 19. I wasn't very experienced (with anything) when we met- he was only my second boyfriend and my first (and only) sexual partner. I was naive and didn't question anything he said, which I now realize was a mistake.
I question if my approach to sex early in our relationship contributed to this in some way. I was a virgin and unwilling to have sex with him outside of a committed relationship, however, I wasn't a total prude and I was open to and excited about being sexual with him. Once we were "exclusive" (about a month after we started spending time together) we had sex. He was always patient with me, he liked teaching me things, he was affirming and respectful. I credit him with helping me develop a good attitude about sex. I'm open minded and I've tried everything he's wanted. I've avoided 'hard' boundaries and let him push me outside my sexual comfort zone. I definitely put effort into being a good partner to him. That being said, he was a little older and experienced, so I imagine he must have felt unsatisfied sometimes.
Beyond the differences in our sexual experience I'm not sure what else might have contributed. I have always taken pride in being good to him and making him and our relationship a priority. I fell in love with him quickly and I've always been very dedicated.
Other than this he's treated me really well. My husband is a good person. I've never doubted his commitment to me and I know he loves me. I've grown into a good person with his guidance; I'm grateful for his leadership and presence in my life. He's smart and successful; he's created a great life for us. He can do anything. It's actually intimidating sometimes, he's just so good at everything and so confident. He makes me smile and laugh every day. He's attractive and physically fit. He holds both of us to high standards, which I greatly appreciate. He elevates every aspect of my life. I honestly feel privileged to be married to him. I love my husband and I think highly of him. He means the world to me.
I'm hurt but I ultimately believe these are past mistakes. I've read quite a bit about forgiveness recently and I'm working on putting it into practice. I don't believe my husband is a cheater but rather a loyal man who cheated, he made mistakes and he deserves my forgiveness. His good qualities and positive contributions to our relationship far outweigh the bad.
All of that considered, I'm really sad. It's hard to describe but I feel like my soul hurts. Like something really deep inside of me aches constantly. I don't know how to fix this feeling or move past it. My husband has been understanding, he lets me cry and he listens to me, but I know I have to deal with this on my own in order to move on. He's done all he can, he sincerely apologized, he's supportive and compassionate, but he can't resolve my feelings for me.
It's confusing. Every instinct I have is telling me to accept this as a series of old mistakes, to forgive, and move forward. But that goes against conventional wisdom, so I wonder if I'm still just really naive. It seems most people, even experts, believe cheating can't be isolated and the cheater has to do specific things to prove their honesty. In my relationship I can't (or won't) require my husband to give me access to his phone or force him to follow certain "rules" to prove himself. He's remorseful and he assured me I know the full extent of his cheating. That's actually a big deal coming from him and I appreciate it. I believe him, but I'm struggling to accept that it's okay to believe him. Like I said, it's confusing and I'm all over the place. Of course this is compounded by the fact that I can't talk to anyone about it.
I'm interested in hearing your take on this situation and would appreciate insight or advice if anyone has anything to offer. How can I cope with this in a healthy way? What are some acceptable requests or expectations for rebuilding trust? I want to forgive him and make peace with this but I don't know if that's a normal reaction. I tend to look for the best in people (most of the time, I'm not perfect) and I try to give the benefit of the doubt. But I don't want to be naive or allow myself to be a doormat but I'm inclined to forgive. Is that really dumb?
TL;DR: My husband cheated during the first year of our relationship. I want to forgive him but I'm doubting my response. I'm sad, hurt, and confused but I still love my husband. I don't know if I'm being too naive and allowing myself to be a doormat by following my instincts.
Also, I'm 27 and my husband is 32. We have been married for 5 years.
