Why is there such a stark difference in how charming 90s actresses were in interviews vs now?

This isn't confined to female actresses. Look at politicians... look at some of the campaign vids that are coming out. I could never FATHOM a politician coming out the way they do now.

All masks are off with the rise of people throwing out the idea of private thoughts. There's no front facing persona, it's all out in the wind. Which I don't think is inherently a bad thing. I do prefer people a little more raw and forthcoming. However, I do think people can also thrive in making an art of how they present themselves and that's just not where we're at right now. Tech evolves much faster than people and we end up with everyone acting like turds.

They were much less accessible and they were not encouraged to “be themselves”. Celebrities are directly accessible to us via social media now.

Combination of the general death of femininity and gender roles with the rise in relatability, oversharing, narcissism, and catering to the lowest common denominator. Hard to have any charm or mystique when you're a macho glam star posting her ill-informed political opinions and half-baked shower thoughts to the world through Twitter every day.

Probably because back then there was still a lot of pressure on them to show themselves as feminine, charming etc, whereas nowadays women can show themselves as they are and don't need to pretend as much.

Women wanted more freedom to let out their most obnoxious, rude, boisterous internal thoughts (that we all have).

The cultural shift happened where poise and self-control and filtering yourself is now viewed as oppression. Therefore, women who “say whatever is on their mind” are valued even if what they say is disgusting, rude, or abrasive.

Also, the men in power in the entertainment industry are the types who like to pump and dump. And women like Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea, and many others act like the sorts of club girls who would make for an easy pump and dump. They promote that in-your-face “hot girl” image versus the more subtle sleek graceful sexiness that women used to have.

Actresses definitely used to be more charming, especially ones prior to the 90s. There aren't many today like Marilyn Monroe, Farrah Fawcett, and Sharon Tate. They had beautiful voices and sweet, gentle demeanors. The closest I can think of is Monica Bellucci. She's this very sexy actress who does a lot of provocative roles, but if you watch her in interviews, she's so ladylike, gentle, doesn't curse or ever say anything unkind. Very classy.

Echoing the other comments that said social media. People become famous off of nonsense, offensive YouTube videos and Instagram pictures these days, which takes away the allure. It’s also why shows like The Hills wouldn’t be popular now. It’s not messy and crazy enough for young people’s standards.

Just like masculinity is being destroyed, I think is the same for the old, true feminine way of being...

the charming, being lovely... it is just ridiculous, and it does not even have sense to me until I read this post, but I just realize that, I do not have the same attraction to modern fake female actors than the previous fake actors lmao

long time ago, you felt like you would fall in love with those fictional characters and you would fucking die for them (you know action movies lol) but now... that feeling is just dead, maybe because I am older now, and fantasy is not the same, I do not know... now everything feels like out of reach because there is a wall, and tbh it does not feel like climb the wall to be worth if you are going to crash agains an hostile attitude or worse..

tbf I am proyecting a lot, again I did not even thinking on this thing never before, and myabe I am part of the problem for having crush on lovely female fictional characters, and now I have no crush on maybe more real, toxic hostile female characters lol

all the things that people said here, but also I think the 90s camera quality has something to do with it. have you ever taken a picture with a vintage camera? I find it makes me look so much better! -and the grainy-ness somehow adds charm and mystery. the lighting seems much dimmer and more sensual too.
