Keep this in mind:

When feminists say "X harms women", they don't mean "X harms the people directly affected by it", but "X could conceivably negatively affect "the sisterhood", which includes all women, everywhere, me included, and I feel harmed by this".

IE: feminist feels personally offended or endangered by prostitution, ergo prostitution "harms women".

Love the post, and this is in my wheelhouse a bit.

First a bit of explanation. Some years back, I was asked by my dad to help care for a special needs cousin that was in adult supportive housing. This is government-sponsored housing for those special needs people who age out of the system for kids, but can function somewhat independently. You know all those special needs people who work at supermarkets and stores doing really basic jobs? That's where they all live. I know hanging around those places that prostitution for special needs people is a real phenomenon, and is popular (but if an open secret) for all involved. The special needs folk (disproportionately male) get broken off, the families and staff have to worry less about inappropriate behavior due to outright horniness, and the prostitutes get cash on the barrel and the added protection of families or staff being around if something goes wrong. Everyone wins with that.

This is also an example of why I get nervous whenever someone says "Feminism is..." There are vicious debates within feminist circles about prostitution, with one side saying that it is inherently exploitative and the other side saying that women having freedom of choice includes the freedom of women to perform sex work. The sex-positive feminists (the pro-prostitution group, for the record) seem to have the momentum, but the radical feminist belief, ultimately based in things like political lesbianism and all that crap, that heterosexuality is BAD still has a lot of staying power.

In other words, get your popcorn, because I think this debate has gone international.

To be fair, sex-positive feminists (most of the ones who use the words cis-gendered and are into poly-relationships) are pro-prostitution for the most part.

Sex-negative feminists are the ones screaming. Most of these gals aren't taken seriously at large in the movement. They're welcomed to get conservative girls to describe themselves as feminists.

I predict about 70% of every bangable woman will prostitute themselves at some point in her life between the ages of 18-30 if prostitution becomes legal and easy.

The swedish system worked because they pumped thousands of tax €s into support for prostitutes. Those women won't be helped when they lose their main source of income.

I am for liberation, no more paternalism from the state. If she wants to sell her body she should have the right to do so. If someone wants to buy sex he should do so. Whenever the state outlaws something he takes rights away from the people. + It always seems like they think that people are retarded.

For example extra tax on cigarettes so people will smoke less. Yeah nobody could figure out that they are bad for your health.

They are going through this in Canada after a recent court decision in Canada ruling that current anti prostitution laws were against the charter of rights and freedoms here. It's currently legal to sell sex here, but ILLEGAL to keep premises for the purposes of selling sex.

Through out the whole court case you had to main parties, you had the feminists who were rabidly against any sort of legalization of prostitution and were screaming that they wanted the "Nordic model" brought into force in Canada.

For those who don't know the Nordic model is essentially "Arrest the men" It makes it legal to sell sex, just not legal to buy it. It's absolutely retarded and every objective study of the Nordic model says that it has been an abject failure and has merely driven sex work deeper underground.

On the pro-legalization side, you had ACTUAL sex workers who tried to present a facts and evidence argument. To the credit of the Canadian Supreme court that was the argument that won. Feminists are tying themselves in knots over that and are now pointing the feminist leviathan lobbying machine at politicians to get their feminist "Nordic model" to become the law in Canada.

There have been countries that have completely legalized sex work (New Zealand for example), and the Cops and sex workers LOVE it. It has made the community safer and better for everyone. Of course the feminists and social conservatives are still seething and fighting it tooth and nail. (Mostly feminists) Complete legalization and regulation (with oversight and enforcement) Is the best way to go.

So, in the light the court decision, the AG here in Canada published a letter that pretty much says the Federal govt here is going to shift to the "Nordic Model". You are seeing feminists everywhere in Canada screaming "Nordic model" because it gets them wet at the idea of arresting all the evil men who buy sex from poor innocent women.

I will freely admit that I am one of those "evil men". I have engaged the services of professional escorts and feminist bullshit is going to stop that any time soon.

Prohibition of sex work if a failure. We have been trying that in the western world for the last 400 years, and it isn't going to start working anytime soon. Feminists just want Govts to piss even more resources down the black hole of prohibition, and use the law to unfairly punish men.

Wow those reactions are unreal.

One conflates slavery and prostitution (pro-tip: they are different things). The other criticizes prostitution for basically all the things legalization would improve.

It's truly hard to understand such illogical - yet heartfelt - viewpoints without involving some sort of subconscious motivation.
