People didnt smile in old photos because they considered it 'low class', or for entertainers, and if they were lucky maybe 2-3 pictures were taken of them during their entire lifetime. So that wouldve been a waste of a photo.
Didnt help that their teeth were often rotting out. You can see the same thing going on in modern Russia.
Its got nothing to do with being manly, since machosism wasnt even established until the late 1800s together with patrioism, both stemming from the nationalistic romanticism from the late 1700s.
The women didnt smile either, same reasons.
[–]choosechaos15 points 10 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link
Photos also used to take a long time to get exposure... long enough that your face muscles would get tired if you tried to smile the whole time.

Hey, dude, I come from Siberia, Irkutsk which is a pretty shitty place even by the Russian standards and people do smile on photos. http://imgur.com/a/a0xhZ - just an example

Thats great man, i love that you proved me wrong about this!
I do remember some saying that russians regard people who smile as stupid or fake, especially in Moscow, is there truth to this?
[–]imma_135 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oh, yeah. That's true because apparently they regard it as disingenuous so they see it as hypocrisy because they are smiling only out of politeness not because they are your friends. I personally think that it is better to look at polite smiles than at genuinely grim faces.
I just wanted to clarify that it isnt due to the poor Russian dental hygiene.
Smiling too much does hinder one's air of authority tho - being a bit more serious sometimes can induce an air of strength while smiles induce coolness and charisma

I really like your post.
However, I want to share some philosophical thoughts about laughter.
Laughing is overrated. We oftentimes laugh out of nervousness and the failure to consciously acknowledge a Truth.
First of all, I'm in my early 20-ties with little of real life experience (but not zero) and I hold Absurdistic view on life along with trying to adopt Stoic teachings in my life. From my point of view, both philosophies fir pretty well in aspects that I consider relevant.
Now, if one accepts that life is absurd and pointless, he will inevitably get depressed. Life is unfair. It seems like the only way you can fight back and protest this by laughing into life's face.
Yes, you can set yourself goals, have ideals, find purpose. You can life joyful and fulfilled life, go your own road, be alpha as fuck. But once in a while you will stop and remember how pointless it all is. The only thing you can do then, is laugh about it continue doing what you were doing. Laugh just to stop yourself from crying about it.
Finally, a short story of mine. I was celebrating the New Year with couple of friends in the city. There was this "magic" place where you would spin 3 times, make a silent wish and then the wish would come true. And so, everyone of us had to make a wish. And somehow I then I had an existential moment. After spending quite a long time thinking about what I really wanted in my life I made a wish. "So that in the end I would have a good laugh about everything".
Maybe that's just my immature philosophy, but I think that Laughter is important. Maybe it's even underrated and not overrated, but its's hard to tell. It might be that most people, like you said, are too often using it to escape their harsh realities. But fuck, reality is harsh and we have a way to escape it at least for a brief moment. We should value that.
[–]lurking_lion5 points 10 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link
You bring up a good point, and I can see how my point on laughing might cause confusion.
When two "joy-filled" people meet, it usually results in buckets of smiles and laughing. If everyone was like this, that would be a dream world. I love laughing it's just that very often I see the reasons for it being a nervous defense, all being suppressed in the unconscious, even if the laugh feels the same to the laugher.
I've been in a similar place with taking on the "absurdidty of the world" and feeling deep and painful nihilistic thoughts. It's hard when the "postmodernism" of the blue pill world plays everything off as a joke. Things like honor are openly mocked today in schools. There are entire subs of synthetic losers out there dedicated just to "high-browing" places like TRP. Seriousness really is a virtue.
These days however, I have slowly broken out of all that and have been relatively "clean" in the mind-state for over a year now. It wasn't until finding RP that I really started "seeing life seriously," and that's not a bad thing, nor is it weak as many here will say.
Life isn't meaningless, and human life is of value. I deeply believe these things. The big question is how do you get yourself to know those things, so it feels real and not just another desperate attempt to find hope like most people do in their jobs, titles, status, identities. Those human axioms are meaningless, but there is Truth, it is just ineffable to grasp as humans.
If you ever feel existential depression and nihilistic anguish the best piece of advice I can offer is this:

But that point would be irrelevant to any of us. It's a two way street. We shouldn't worry too much about our relevance to the world in a thousand years. What happens in a hundred years matters not to us as us to then. We are sentient beings living in the moment, not static observers of the universe. What we should think about are the present and our immediate future. Worrying about the grand scheme of things will only distract us from what truly matters in front of us. Our goals, our duties, our relationships, our passions. Instead of living a fulfilling and satisfying life, we would waste time disregarding any actions as irrelevant and die empty and alone.
[–]raisins3142 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
if one accepts that life is absurd and pointless
Just because it does not have some "point" that was objective and laid out in advance by some creator does not mean that you cannot attach your own meaning to it. It's like wanting the author of a poem to explain exactly what he felt as he wrote it, instead of having your own impression. Or maybe religion promises something so absurdly great, that we feel impoverished if it is not true. Sort of a contrast thing (like jumping from pool to hot tub). It is narcissistic to me to believe that life is pointless just because you have to come up with your own point and it eventually ends.

Fulfill your masculine polarity, revel in the pain. Find your mission, revel in the struggle. Fight for the light, we were born to fight. The only thing certain besides birth is death, why waste your time studying the abyss when we're all going to face it sooner or later?
Self-mastery. Master those chemicals in your head, master your actions, master your habits, master your thoughts, master your mind and then will it to fulfill your mission.

A month ago, I discovered that I didn't need to be happy, but satisfied. That was thanks to some posts here and and Maslow's pyramid.

But what about Drive? When I'm satisfied (in my job for e.g) I have less drive to better myself.
[–]ChadThundercockII 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Like we say all the time, it's not about drive or motivation, it's about discipline and habit. Also, our brains don't like to work above the survive and thrive threshold. That's when the discipline comes in.

In my work I focus on helping people identify unmet needs that lead to dysfunction, codependency, and addiction. The unmet need that will fuck you up the most is unconditional positive regard. How many of us were told by our elders growing up, "You're always so serious! Let's see a smile!"
Because of shit like that, I developed a strong sense of guilt about my introverted outlook on life, even going so far as to change my facial expression to a more "happy" one.
To accept myself for who I am, objectively assess what I want to become, and not let a single fucking human's judgement alter my vision for myself... That's my fulfillment.

Modern People are simply stupid. Stupid people are often happy.
"Where the good begins.-- Where the poor power of the eye can no longer see the evil impulse as such because it has become too subtle, man posits the realm of goodness; and the feeling that we have now entered the realm of goodness excites all those impulses which had been threatened and limited by the evil impulses, like the feeling of security, of comfort, of benevolence. Hence, the duller the eye, the more extensive the good. Hence the eternal cheerfulness of the common people and of children. Hence the gloominess and grief - akin to a bad conscience - of the great thinkers. from Nietzsche's The Gay Science, s. 53, Walter Kaufmann transl."|

Really nice post.
The term "happiness" should be banished. It has too much cultural baggage attached to it. It's all about good feelz and has nothing to do with the Truth.
Were Sitting Bull, Tupac Shakur, Ernest Hemingway, Theodore Roosevelt and other self-actualized dudes Happy™ in the modern sense?
No.
Creative, bursting with life, and aggressive as hell? Yes.
I am also a retired funny guy. It's a beta-role to play - the court jester basically. You get to hang around with some high value guys since you're entertaining and easy to be around, but in the things that actually matter you lose out.
Any ways, our culture is totally messed up right now. It's basically the Hampster Wheel on a national scale and really needs to be pulled back into reality.

For me a big part of it was feeling guilty (common beta guilt) during all the moments of silence with friends. When people are boring, or pull out their phones and bring nothing to the table, I often felt a pull to spice things up. It was draining.
Then once you build self-respect, conserve your energy, and start keeping your peace around people, you find that most of these "friends" want little to do with you, and are afraid now, precisely because you are calm and joyful.
And with female "friends"... you're a tool. It's like taking away a favorite old toy from them.
There's also a guilt and sadness in acknowledging to yourself that your friends suck. Along with all the RP truths.

I don't understand all the problem with the jester being a beta-role. How is this the case?
Jung's 12 archetypes - www.soulcraft.co/essays/the_12_common_archetypes.html - examine the jester, along with some of the others. Everyone has a mixture of archetypes in them - including the jester.

I will say that the smiling thing has been brought up before and doesn't always compute. Teddy Roosevelt is one example, also when you think of a guy with game or charm you think of a guy who smiles and jokes. When I think of a witty person I think of smiles as well

I battled mild to mid-depression until one day I realized I no longer cared so much about being happy, that it was overrated and a cultural obsession. Now, I'm fine for the most part. Happiness is not a fish that you can catch.
I rarely ask myself "am I happy?". I rather be other things like fulfilled, accomplished, knowledgeable, confident, and the list goes on.

Legendary Man
I am with you there, except everyone wanted to say PTSD and I told them to fuck off. SO what some people died in a war, we all will die, and you know what those men who died did more in that short amount of time then the majority of these blue pill betas and their army of planets. I have learned to stay in the middle mostly because I had no choice, take it from someone who was forced to learn. Not everyone is ready for reality, and sometimes the lack of expression is what separates the thin line.
I heard a long time ago, that we have two choices in life. We can either lead a happy life or a life of meaning. It's our actions that choose not our thoughts.

The Middle Road
Buddhism is sometimes referred to as the Middle Way. You'd enjoy it, if you haven't already been studying it.
[–]EAZYE079 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
“Happiness” is about the “highs and lows”. Ups and downs. Buddhist monks have long warned that happiness comes with pain. You cannot have one without the other. All the highs that you experience will fall into lows. Pain complements happiness.
As 50Cent once said in one of his songs : "Some days wouldn't be special if it wasn't for rain, joy wouldn't feel so good if it wasn't for pain"

I think either way you look at it life is about getting as much pleasure as you can before you die. Now if you do drugs and alcohol and kill people you most likely will die soon. Instead make choice that give you the most pleasure out of life but also do not decrease your life span as much. If you want to party travel and die at 55 that seems reasonable considering you may live to what 80 but never have lived life. Seek happiness let it drive you. IDK where you got this idea but our entire being is about seeking happiness or more rather having experiences that are great with friends/family. So you're right invest in things like education health for that fulfillment but not smiling or enjoying life is retarded. Don't smile because you are more attractive to women not because you want to be alpha lol

It's not necessarily "blue pill". Remember that "blue pill" refers to ignorance, lacking the understanding of reality. There's not a lot of objectivity in philosophy. Stoicism and Epicureanism are both perfectly valid philospohies. It is "blue pill" to believe that pursuit of virtue is the only valid path for a person's life.
Read more about Epicureanism: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicureanism#Philosophy
[–]aewiggin 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Right. So there are objective criteria which you can use to judge the quality of philosophies, but determining which criteria to use is black and white. You believe that excellence, ambition and achievement are the most important qualities in life. However it's not logical assert that this is absolute. Saying that "being great" is most important in life is like saying that apples are the best tasting fruit. It's illogical.
Hedonism is pointless, but so is everything else. We're all going to die anyway. Hedonism doesn't promote greatness, that is true. But you have to recognise that not everyone needs to aspire to greatness.
If you want to be great, then be it.
