Other countries have done this - Israel comes to mind - and the result is that the runway models are way hotter. The girls banned are the ones who are sickeningly skinny. They haven't mandated using plus sized models or anything.

You guys have to remember, fashion is run by gay men who tend to favor very, very androgenous looking women to walk the runway. A lot of these chicks are clocking in at like 110 lbs at 5'11, it's pretty insane, and they don't look good at all, but they do look more like boys, which is the point. Straight men like fit women, but if they don't have tits and ass, they don't look like women.

Also, I once talked to a (female) fashion photographer who claimed that people outside the industry don't really understand the extent of the problem as most photos are heavily photoshopped to remove the telltale signs of anorexia, and give the girls curves they don't have. So you end up thinking this chick is hot when she looks like a heroin addict in real life.

Anyway, I'm more worried that this creates a precedent and in the near future this type of laws will be expanded. It's not like the government would want individuals that would be able to fight and oppose the government.

Sure, everyone might slam me, but I approve of this move. Banning anorexic models is probably going to have a small but non-zero effect on the general health of the female populace; anorexia is just as unhealthy as obesity, if not worse — and I really don't think people should have much of a thing for underfed, malnourished skeletal women.

When fathers aren't important, girls don't receive the unconditional love of a man when they're very young. The consequence is that their first pleasurable experience with men is the attention they get from being sexually attractive, and want more.

Who gets more attention from their looks than models? The hamster sees a solution: get skinny. Because she's young and ignorant, disordered eating seems an excellent tool for accomplishing that goal, much like a hammer for driving screws.

Obviously this law is in the books to placate the fee-fees of the feminists. It uses 'health' as a premise but we all know that it's an attempt to regulate what men should be attracted to. Of course, we know that you can't force attraction. Men will always want younger, tighter and fitter. It's hard-wired.

The betamax legislators are just tossing this cookie over to the vocal feminazis (they are hungry fatties after all) in the hopes of placating them long enough to finish their tour of public office duty but we all know in TRP that responding to incessant nagging with any compliance will never end the nagging, it makes it worse. Interestingly, the doctor's note thing is a complete loophole of course, things will hum along just as they did before. It's just lip service. Responding in any shape or form to the feminazis however is a grievous mistake. This just makes the noise louder and it means we're stuck hearing it longer.

In the USA, 145 deaths per year are attributed to anorexia. It is estimated that anywhere between 100,000 and 400,000 deaths per year are attributed to obesity. The CDC pegs it at a conservative 120,000 per year. 83,000% more deaths due to gluttony over deaths due to teenage fee-fees. Let's keep things in perspective -- anorexia kills just a little more than annual lightening strikes. I'm not saying there shouldn't be a health system response to anorexia, in fact a good response is already in place, but this simply shows how ridiculously bogged down we are to stupid idealogical posturing for power. Trivial female bullshit.

I'd have to say that about 45% of the women I see on a daily basis are deal-breaker fat.

You know what I don't see? Women who are deal-breaker skinny. So I think we might be fighting this war on the wrong side of the scale.

All I see is a law passed to protect workers who are pushed toward being anorexic. Health and Safety laws are not all bad. Workers during the industrial revolution or even today's Chinese workers had/have it bad. I sure as hell would like a safe work environment and not work in those shit-holes. I really don't understand how people can endorse corporate behavior like this that endangers it's workers in the name of profit. Some of those models look like they are going to pass out at any moment. In addition, their eating habits are severely f'ed up. This is opinion from someone on the left but I respectfully disagree with your assessment that this is un-needed policing.

Anorexia is no joke.

Years ago I lived in a large house that was in a legal dispute over it's ownership (bankruptcy) and it was rented out as a share rental. People would rent for a while then leave. It was a great house... worth a million, but I rented at $500 a month in an exclusive area in California. (a great deal)

Anyway... there was one girl that was severely anorexic and after getting to know her I realized she didn't realize she was thin to the point of sickness.

Below a certain level an anorexic is just crazy.

I actually suggested that people think she had full blown AIDS by looking that way and it might have sunk in a little to change her mental perception.

I'm against fatties, but the anorexic are just as mentally confused.

That's really not necessary though, since how many models are there (who work in the model industry, not self-proclaimed tumblr models), that even approach being unhealthy overweight?

The article specifies that a doctor will have to judge whether or not the model has a healthy weight. The real thing I'm wondering about is, though hypothetical as the situation may be, what would happen if some modeling agency decided to run a catwalk with just obese women (talking >25 bmi). They would be unhealthy just as well

Heroin Chic has always been a turnoff to me. It's obviously unhealthy; I don't get the appeal.

I happen to prefer Marilyn Monroe size, which is considered downright fat by prevailing model standards, though American women are far fatter than this on average today.

As far as the ban, I'm usually against this as a solution, but it's been demonstrated that these ads lead to unhealthy body image issues in the general population, and actual societal costs in the form of anorexia and eating disorders becoming reinforced.

France has acknowledged they have an eating disorder epidemic, partly fueled by unrealistic expectations of fashion. I find it problematic young girls comparing themselves to PhotoShop avatars who only eat half a sandwich a day supplemented by tons of drugs.

If there is a law saying models shouldn't starve themselves, so what, models now have an official weight class. I'd like to see more big butts on the catwalk anyway

Being underweight is worse for one's health than being overweight. Women have died trying to stay thin enough to model. Is that the kind of society you want?
