First of all, most of you would probably drop a girl who gets paralyzed, so don't act like you're above this shit and his ex is evil for leaving him.

Second of all, he said he was depressed after it happened, that most likely dramatically increased the probability of her leaving. Had he shown that he wasn't fazed by it and he'd get back on his feet in no time at least to his girl, he might have had a chance of keeping her. He was no longer making her feel good and showed weakness.
