As you say the late bloomer has to do all this shit; get and maintain fitness, have a decent income, develop a variety of other skills, while the early bird presumably has two things early in life; natural confidence and physical fitness (usually from a sport). These guys are also usually not 'aware' of gender dynamics, they simply succeeded through instinct, and thus are more likely to fall in the 'beta bux' category as they get older, because they don't know how to avoid it.

The little guy puts in the time working out and learning a martial art, while the big guy only maintains his strength. At the end of the day the little guy can beat the bigger guy because he's matched his strength and is more variable in his skills.

The natural in college, was he fat or social awkward or scrawny?
