Hard to tell without a picture, but I would say black blazer, black tie, grey slacks is hard to pull off. If you are rocking (<14% BF and Big) and it fits well, it will look good. Otherwise?? Besides, dudes who are aesthetic can pull off anything anyway.

My advice for n00bs: Go to brooks bros, or at least JosephAbanks, and let them dress you. DO NOT ACCEPT "It goes with anything." Get specific combinations. LOOK FOR THE OLD GUY who has been there 20 years. If he says "It goes with anything", ask if it could go with (3 things you pick from the rack) if he pauses and says "... it ... could" he's phoning it in. Get help from someone else.

Remember, FITTING WELL is 50% of it. If you're overweight or have bad posture, it's more like 80%.

For casual stuff I've found good advice on /r/mensfashion.

One last thought: Some large percentage of fashion is confidence. If you change for your SO, you just entered her frame and destroyed your own confidence, you'll likely feel worse about yourself, and thus look worse.

Confidence is weird.

I always thought the PUAs who peacock look like dorks. And they do. And they are. In the STILL PHOTOS. but if they actually carry that with confidence it doesn't matter. (For example, google "Corey Worthington" and "The Alpha Buddah" :-)

If it were me, I'd try to riff out something like this "I tell you what, when it comes to fashion, I'm often right, occasionally wrong, but never boring, huh?" :-)

Check if you can find the same style online. If you can't find anyone else wearing that combo, odds are it isn't good.

A note about women's opinions though. Some of the time they downright lie to keep you from getting too hot. Think "I don't like muscley men" type sayings. Other times they confuse hot and cute. My wife recently told me to do the european type comb-over haircut. Said it looked hot. Then immediately told me a story about how her friend got her young sons' hair cut that way and they looked so adorable. Adorable =/= hot. She won't fuck adorable.

Suit starter kid

Charcoal or Navy Blue suit.

White or Light blue shirt. standard collar (not spread or point) 1/no pockets, NO OXFORD button down. Fused collar is ok, inserts are best.

2.5-3.5" tie. jacquard in burgundy or dark blue

Socks to style.

Oxford shoes in medium brown with matching belt colour, small unobtrusive buckle.

Fit is PARAMOUNT! I could waste a lot of time talking fit. Whats your size?

Also, if it's a suit, the pants and jacket match. you have a blazer and pants.

What did she dump you on? how does it fit? Can you post a picture?

Give Express a try. They have a limited color selection but an abundance of fits and sizes. Significantly reduces the need to get alterations. You could pick pants from one fit/style and a jacket from another but since they are all made from the same fabric (but cut in various styles) you essentially end up with a custom suit to fit YOUR body.

Navy Blue

Charcoal

These are standard in business formal. Black is evening wear, funerals, and formal events.

For ties, I have worked on building from the basic staples first, then getting fancy. Saturated colours, blue and red/burgandy are strong colours, move on as you see fit.

In order from formal to casual:

Jequiard (soon)
Solid
Texture Stripe
Garrison Stripe University stripe goes the other direction
Polka Dot
Tartan
Other

Shirts? (also, notice the pairings I've used above) Formal To casual:

White
Light blue
Pink
~~Light Grey~~ (I've yet to see it work)
pinstripe
Dotted
Gingham
Windowpane
Plaid
Military (epaulets, double pocket etc)
western (yolk, roping)

Shoes

Go standard. Oxfords are the business shoe

oxford Ignore this sock, don't do this.

Notice, the leather under the laces touches, this is called closed lacing, more formal than open lacing (where you can see the tongue). Also, the capped toe. Don't get fancy here until you know what you're doing. The back/heel can either be stiched with a single stitch, or have a heel cap. The leather is smooth, (not like an orange peel) and not shiny. The bottoms are leather, see a cobbler to put weatherstripping and a tap on the heel to prevent excessive wear.

Also, no wearing overshoes, they are super gay, just clean them, have a cleaning kit at work.

No brogue no wingtips etc.

now you can get fancy, and ignore all this, once you know what you're doing. Notice, black tie, pink polka dot shirt, royal blue suit, paired with black patten oxfords.

A good rule of thumb

break the rule once per outfit. e.g. one descheveled[sp] piece per outfit. Messy hair? The rest of the outfit is on point. Polka dot tie? White shirt, navy suit, brown oxfords (the tie is the casual piece for contrast)

Or in another example? here Hair on point, clean shaven, the military shirt and woolen tie, super casual, as is the plaid suit, and brown oxfords. All casuall, with the shoes on point. So you can play it the oppositte way also.

And if you want to do jeans? Blazers, never suit jackets, and keep the jeans dark, at most a small break, and no distressing. Pair with a chelsea boot, or similar mid-formal shoe. Sneakers look like shit, oxfords look like shit.

At the very least, fit the shoulder, everything else can be altered.

No further thought needed. "Hush your face; I look like Johnny Cash!" (said with a cocky/funny smile and tone)

That said… the gray shirt on gray pants might not be the best choice. Does the shirt have a pattern to break things up?

Almost any other complementary colored shirt and tie pairing will probably work with those pants and blazer.

Can you add a burgundy sweater or sweater vest?

Can you pull this off with jeans instead?

EDIT to add for guys other than the OP (since he already bought these clothes…):

Gray blazer and black pants is easier to work with than black blazer and gray pants. Just check google.

Without knowing anything else about the cut, fit or style of your clothes, a black blazer / tie / shoes with gray shirt / pants combo sounds like something an aging wannabe metrosexual would wear.
