I have lurked around for a while and definitely learned some valuable information. I’m currently halfway through The Rational Male and have NMMNG on deck.

My wife and I are both 38, have been married 14 years and have 3 children. Things are going very well between us but I know there is always room for improvement in all things. One thing that I have pretty much always known is a weakness of mine, and after reading here I have further confirmed, is my inability to give the proper level of comfort when it is needed.

When my wife and I got married my sister performed the ceremony. She went online to get ordained. It’s something that happens all the time so we didn’t think about it until a couple of months ago when some friends of ours whom were married a couple of years ago,by a friend that was also ordained online, found out their marriage was not valid because our state doesn’t recognize the online church through which their officiant was ordained. Our friends ended up going to the courthouse to make things legal. My wife brought her concerns to me and I told her that I had gone through the ceremony 14 years ago and I don’t really care what the state has to say about it. My wife’s response was “what if you decide to divorce me and leave me with nothing?” I said, “ don’t give me a reason to divorce you.” The next day I verified with the county courthouse and we are legal. Apparently my sister used a more reputable website than my friends. I kept my research to myself. Also, our state does not recognize common law marriage.

Recently we purchased a new home. I placed the house in an LLC of which I am the sole member. When I let my wife know the closing on the mortgage was a couple of days out she asked if there would be anything for her to sign and I told her there wouldn’t be as everything is going through the LLC and I am the only member. Again she asked about what happens if I decide to divorce her and leave her with nothing. Again I responded that she shouldn’t give me a reason to divorce her and ended the conversation.

I didn’t do any of this to cause dread but it seems to have caused some. (I do understand that generally dread is an unintended consequences of a man improving himself. Improvement is the goal, not dread) She has always been interested in seeking my approval but it seems like that has ratcheted up recently. Since I know comfort is a weakness of mine I am making an effort to improve. However, I also want to keep her on her toes. Relationships are broad, deep and complicated so I know this is just a limited amount of information on our relationship but based on the circumstances described above, should I offer some more comfort or let it be?
