Bottom line, almost every woman starts their conversation in the middle. If you act butt-hurt for asking what planet her question started from, she will take your lunch money and laugh at you.

It's not your fault, any conversation you have had with a woman is perpetual. There was a start to it, but no end. It always continues from the last point in the conversation no matter how long the interval.

It is the center of the universe mindest. Everything and everyone within her sphere orbits around her and should take notice of where she is and when you last spoke and what about.

I usually deflect with "Put the crazy away for 5 and lets start from the top" or "Who have you been talking to and how long has this conversation been going on without me?"

Or pretend you already have alzheimers and ask her who she is and what she is doing in your house and go from there.

I get the feeling something about memory loss freaks you out. That's why she's shit testing you about it. She senses a chink in your armor. Show her you're not worried by making a joke about it.

She says something like "Use your noodle. Come on you can remember, earlier today."

I think if you simply refuse to take her seriously you can pass this test.

This skill (remembering specific details about unrelated and unimportant events) is an area where women excel and they LOVE to lord it over men. Yesterday my wife called me completely out of the blue:

"Blue, I have X Pharmacy on the other line, and they say you used your debit card so they gave you a $40.00 cash refund when you were there to get boy#2's prescription."

Me: "Sweetie, I have no idea what you are talking about.

Her: "Well it was on March 1."

Me: Losing frame: "You want me to remember whether I got a couple 20's from a clerk 30 days ago. Are you fucking serious?"

Her: irritated. "Well I would remember whether I got cash back. It is still March you know."

Me: "That's because you are a special, irreplaceable fucking snowflake who is an idiot savant if she thinks most people remember shit like that."

Her: "Well fine. Bye."

My wife always asks me shit when I'm elbow-deep in something else, usually without context, leaving me to pick up her train of thought. It means she's still hamstering about it, even if it's not important to me at the moment. That's not a shit test, but some might consider it disrespectful of their time to interrupt another task.

The other part, yeah, that's a shit test.

To understand why she starts a conversation in the middle, see the comment threads by /u/over60_stupid_loner, /u/purpleveteran and /u/whitetrashkiller. Basically she's been hamstering about it for who knows how long before she brings it up to you, and she brings it up to you at the point she's in in her brain.

The fact that she asks you the question when you're in the middle of some shit is probably not a shit test, but is knowingly or unknowingly disrespectful, depending on what you've instructed her to do when you're working.

To avoid the name calling etc, which is both shit testing AND disrespectful, you might consider, if you haven't already, making her understand that she needs to not interrupt you when you're working.

Ways to do that are to say something like "when I'm in the office, I'm off-limits unless it's an emergency." That gives her the chance to choose to respect you. If she still doesn't, then probably there's something lacking that keeps her from feeling like she can respect you and I refer you to the sidebar and/or to making a specific post about that.

If you don't mind, or welcome the interruptions from tedious work then you're going to invite the comments about your memory, because she's starting in the middle, and it's not your responsibility to monitor what she's hamstering about. However, the way to mitigate this is doing three things.

Be the person she respects, so that she is less inclined to insult you. The effectiveness of this will be subject to how much her inclination to insult you is because she doesn't respect you vs how much of it is a shit/comfort test.
If it is a shit test, deal with it how /u/scurvemuch, /u/cholomite, /u/toothdude, /u/ and especially /u/bluepillprofessor and /u/[deleted] say about this.
Some suggest silence, ignoring and not responding. This is an adequate second-best response. It's a good exercise in maintaining frame, but is often less effective than the solutions in number two. While you're working on having a quick enough mind to do number two, you can do this.

For the first part, starting a conversation in the middle, women do this with other women; it isn't meant to be hostile. My husband says I have a "minimize screen" button but no exit button, if that makes sense. I have learned to stop doing this with him because it annoys him.

The second part is just shitty behavior, IMHO.
