The lifting advice in this sub is like the relationship advice at /r/askmen.

You don't tone. You don't workout. You don't "get bulk", nor do you "get definition".

You lift weights. This gives muscle. To grow bigger you also need food, as in a calorie surplus. This usually mean a little bit of fat as well. Yes, this is refered to as "bulking".

Cardio IS optional. What makes you "defined" is low bf. You get this by keep lifting, and adjusting your calories so you're in a deficit.

What are your current stats? Either decide to cut or bulk.

Estimate your calorie need, subtract/add 500, EAT.

You're obviously eating at too high a calorie surplus, if you want definition you're going to have to cut (eat at a calorie deficit for a period of time). Whether that is now or after a few more months of eating at a surplus (all be it a smaller surplus than what you currently eat, to ensure lean muscle gains and minimal fat).

Count you calories. Estimate your TDEE (Energy you need daily, it will be around 2000 cal), and eat at a calorific deficit. Eat less food thatn you need, and your body will obtain the extra required energy from stored food (i.e. fat).

200 - 300 cal deficit should be enough. More than 500 cal below your TDEE gets dangerous.

You cut with diet and cardio, you build muscle by working out.

If you are not toned either you are holding a lot of water weight which is usually a vitamin problem, or your diet sucks and you are fat ontop of muscle.

Lose fat. I gained 15kg at 5'10 and although I am not massive, I'm built fairly well but I looked like shit with a shirt off - my torso was just a definitionless slab. Lose fat after you've gained some size and you will appear much bigger and toned after you've lost weight.

What is your workout routine? How much do you weigh? how many grams of Protein do you eat a day? How many calories are you eating/aiming for? Are you doing cardio?

Diet, cardio, and workout routine. There's different types of routines for what you are aiming for. There's strength/mass building and then there's tone/cut building.

You are probably lifting and training your muscles to bulk instead of doing the exercises to tone them.

MyFitnessPal will help you figure out where the flaws are in your diet. At 10% or so body fat you should have crystal clear definition.

If you really need to figure that out, find a gym that does volumetric body fat measurement.

I'm working on this now. I'm in a similar fix myself. Luckly, I'm also naturally broad too. You'd be surprised at how much eating clean and subbing out juicy drinks for water will do. It's helping me a bit so far. Keep lifting, and eating clean should do the trick.

Green tea also helps with anti-oxidents and suppressing appetite. Or at least it does for me.

You need to learn and understand the concept of body fat percentage. And understand that the size of your muscles and your body fat percentage are independent and not related to each other. Lifting weights makes your muscles bigger, it doesn't necessarily make you more defined or shredded. Lowering your body fat does that.

OP - cut your BMR by 500 calories daily and continue working out as normal. You will lose fat and gain definition. Done. Enjoy.
