The village I live in offers free, cheap and expensive classes at the community center, community college and even at the fire department.

They had a log splitting seminar last fall that I went to (I already split logs) and it was a blast. $5 suggested donation to the stray cats fund or something.

Books and more books. I grew up reading things like The Boy Mechanic and Handyman's Book and always tinkering with things. Youtube videos can be hit or miss; sometimes there's gold from start to finish, other times you waste 10 minutes to get 1min of actual information.

This year I hope to build a backyard pizza oven and make some fancy stepping stones with glass aggregate.

Sometimes you have to just jump in and start doing a project, have a few "learning experiences" along the way, and before you know it, your new skill set opens new project possibilities.

Anything that involves physical work or roughs you up a bit should be fine. It's not hard to get started with google and actually talking to people.

Why would his age preclude him from looking stuff up on YouTube? At 30, he's probably had internet access most of his life. I gaurantee when there's a task to be done and he doesn't know how, he's Googling the answer.

Lift. Not as a hobby but as a normal part of your life. A fundamental part of your life. You do it whether you feel like it or not.

As far as hobbies, I think making your own beard oil can be a fun little diversion. I am also a cigar smoker and love participating in that community.

Paint, a intermediate paint set and tools will run you under 100$. I'd probably recommend acrylic. More forgiving on mistakes.

Ballroom dancing. But only if you want to spend a few hours a week pressed up against a couple dozen fit girls in their late teens and early 20s, one after the other, while you're one of maybe two or three men in the room.

Fishing and hunting are pretty manly. Nothing is more satisfying than killing your own food and eating it. It helps you understand the cost of your food in terms of taking a life.

Bushcraft; learn some useful skills, get back to nature, and be alone with yourself (or a buddy if you wish, I prefer alone)

Take a class at the local community college. The ones around me offer everything from cooking and sewing to HVAC, welding, and airplane repair, with all kinds of things in between. A few hundred dollars for tuition and books and you'll acquire a skill that you didn't have before. If you don't have a community college near you, find a maker space. Some are free, some have a subscription, but there will be people there who know something you don't and would probably be willing to teach you.

YouTube is perfectly fine for learning. Just because it wasn't really around fifteen years ago doesn't mean it's not there now. Watch, take notes, and try it yourself.

Trying it yourself is the crucial part. Very few people learn just by reading or watching. The majority of us learn by doing. Yes, you'll fuck up. Yes, there will be mistakes. But by making those mistakes, you learn how to NOT make them. So get a project in your head, plan it out as best you can, and give it a try. It will not go to plan, and you'll have to work around that. By doing that, you'll learn how to do it.

Some of the things I've picked up over the years that have been a great way to explore, express yourself and overall become more interesting include rock climbing, hiking, camping, cooking, woodworking, sailing, and shooting.
