Anyone have advise for conversing with someone who has a shitty personality?

I'm not talking about people who just aren't interested in you and I should be taking this as an IOD. This is just who they are and how they talk/act.

I had a friend who has always been like this. She invited me out for breakfast this morning to catch up as I had moved away for a while. We already know each other and hell, even made out with her back in high school now that I think about it.

Point being though, her body language and voice just are incredibly boring. She'll sit there - no real gestures, same vocal tonality, and just kind of jumps into a "interview" like set of conversations. "So tell me about xyz". And when we're talking just no doesn't really come off as interested. Thing is - this is just how she is, it's not that she's actually not interested.

It really affects my mood and interest in the conversation though, so I have to try extra hard to get a conversation going. Hell, at one point I just spewed off like 5 questions in a row and she kept giving me short answers and I called her out on it with a light-hearted joking "I can keep asking questions - or you can give me a bit longer answer you know.." and she started talking more then.

Obviously this happens out in the field as well. I wasn't gaming my friend, I was just talking. But I know I've run into this in the field too and I generally take it as disinterest - but the same thing happens, it affects my game and conversation because I feel like I'm coming off as a try-hard because the other person isn't as vested.
