In my life, I've been fat (260), then skinny (160), then unfortunately fat again (260).
The process of weight loss itself is simple. Creating a caloric deficit is all it takes. Find a calorie amount that works for you (for me it was 1500), and stick to it. Walks are also great, but imo doing too much exercise on an overweight body is going to lead to burning out, high risk of injury, and will usually lead to going back to old habits when you get tired of it. I call the process "the lazy loser diet", because it's focused way more on counting calories than it is on pumping iron or running a lot.
I'm not going to say a fad diet like Keto can't work, because it clearly can, but I think for the average person, the better strategy would be to lead a life focused on moderation. Mostly eating healthy meals and good foods, but indulging on occasions. Saving up calories on days when you don't need them, so you can go all out on a nice meal you've been craving one day. I've had mixed results with intermittent fasting, but I definitely recommend setting a time at night after which you will not eat anything (8 pm is a good one).
The hard part of weight loss is all in the mental game. Putting up with the bs of life every day and not seeking the comfort of junk foods and restaurants to get yourself through it. Having a fulfilling social life without going out to eat with your friends and romantic interests. You have to find an activity you can reliably do to relieve that stress and stay away from food. First time I lost weight it was video games... this time I've got no idea what it is and that's why I've been struggling to lose weight for two years (I'm hoping this time to reprogram it into something like shooting some basketball in my driveway or taking walks). You also need to have a plan in place to maintain the weight loss once you've done it... deprivation won't work forever. That's when doing cardio to up the number of calories, lifting weights, etc, makes sense
It's also important to not put every problem in your life on losing weight. I thought when I lost weight I'd suddenly be a chick magnet, have energy to be super successful in other areas, etc.. It's not the case. It just levels the playing field with other guys quite a bit, but it doesn't give you everything you need to succeed. When I lost weight the first time, I started doing daygame, and it took me about two years to get my first relationship (just a bunch of shitty uneventful dates in between, and lots of missed opportunities w/ super hot girls in my college who in hindsight were interested in me) That two-year process was all about building my confidence and assertiveness with women, and once I had built it I started getting results. It's about not being timid and telling girls directly what you want rather than being afraid of rejection. So many of my "dates" were with girls I did an indirect cold approach to and didn't even specify my romantic interest in them. I wouldn't make moves physically and kinda just hoped it would naturally happen. It never did, until finally with my first gf I was just more straightforward with her and told her I wanted to date after we had hung out a few times.
When I lost my relationship, I had let myself go, and I was 250 lbs again (again maintenance is everything), but when I went out to do cold approach, I actually ended up very quickly finding a fwb situation despite looking like absolute shit? Why? Because I still had confidence and assertiveness with talking to women, and I was more decisive on dates. Confidence is more important than looks with women, though you'll definitely get more results as a fit confident guy than an unfit one.
As for the idea that there's a body fat threshold where women just magically start approaching you, I disagree. Learning to take the iniative in dating as man is everything. Don't sit back and wait for women to approach you, or even wait for signs of "pre-selection"... if you see someone you like, go talk to them.

You really think women will approach you based on your body fat percent? Where are you getting these statistics from?
As a woman, I can safely say this is something that has never once crossed my mind when talking to a guy lol..
Editing to add- I think it’s awesome you are encouraging people to get healthy and giving them resources and advice. I’m a fan of intermittent fasting and I have seen and experienced results from it! I apologize if my comment came off snobby at all. That wasn’t at all how I meant to sound.

Mine too. Lost 60 lbs from OMAD. Wasn't even exercising much. Life is a lot better. I noticed men and women are much more favorable to you.

That’s actually really interesting! Maybe they see you as someone that’s knowledgeable about health and fitness and value your opinion and advice! I can definitely see that!
[–]Delicious_Ad_1853 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
lol are you really trying to pretend that there aren't women who pursue chiseled men? And even more that are subconsciously more receptive to them?
Biology isn't the only thing, but it is a thing.
P.S. They ain't really looking for advice. Women use openers too, ya know.
[+]labyrinthlilith -11 points-10 points-9 points 4 years ago* (10 children) | Copy Link
No, there are plenty of women that pursue men based on their body type. You are obviously right about that. However, I don’t think someone’s physical appearance is the main determining factor in how receptive women will be to you.

You can think whatever you want, but there's an entire library of psych studies demonstrating that physical appearances affect interpersonal behavior. There's a reason that models and salesmen tend to be very attractive.
[+]labyrinthlilith -8 points-7 points-6 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Attractive to who? Attractiveness is subjective. There’s physical attraction and emotional attraction, sexual, romantic...Biologically speaking, people aren’t only considering physical attraction when choosing a mate.

You're the only one using words like "only". Put down your strawman.

I think a lot of the people on this forum are already discouraged and frustrated. I guess I was trying to put a positive spin on it so that those guys sitting there already feeling frustrated and struggling with low self esteem/insecure about their looks, won’t feel even more hopeless about women finding them attractive. I was trying to put it into perspective for people that aren’t “conventionally attractive” because personality and life goals plays a big role in attracting a mate. I’ve talked to men that have literally made me stammer upon meeting them because they look so good, and then after attempting to talk I quickly realize that although they’re nice to look at, there’s nothing going on upstairs. And I’ve also talked to men that aren’t physically attractive at first but after talking with them and connecting on a mental/emotional level, I find them hot af. 🤷🏼♀️
I just wanted to add that our physical appearance isn’t everything. I don’t think this was the meaning behind OP making this post, I think it was more to inspire others to get healthy. Which is awesome and always a positive thing to encourage!
[–]MUhholen 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You won't get to know the personality of a person unless he passes a certain level of attractiveness. You are lying if ur not approaching people based on looks. The point of losing fat is it opens more doors and opportunities, and well if you are fat then most doors are closed and fewer people are open to getting to know you closer.
[–]rivetcitymayor 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I never experienced that in my life lol, it’s always been girls that think I look good that I get. The whole “ he was unattractive but after talking to them I found them hot “ shit is only happening on mars

Encouragement is good, but it needs to stay in a realistic context.
Guys shouldn't fret about fixed characteristics like race, height, etc, but they should work on their conditioning because it will improve their results (and it's good for their mental and physical health anyways).
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

She's not wrong. It's just that we basically make every post here based on the assumption that we all understand it's a numbers game so you could begin damn near every sentence with " more often than not"
You're going to get a better initial reception, if you're in shape and now it's a downhill battle, just don't screw it up too much.
If you're out of shape youre going to get a worse initial reception and it's now an uphill battle, you've gotta have way more going for you or just be lucky to really click.

How many fat dudes do you date?
[–]labyrinthlilith 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
I was in a serious relationship with a guy that was “fat” for 5 years. And he was fat when I met him(for the record)
[–]xonbuhg 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
Why though?
And this must be super rare case, you know you can’t take exception as a counter example, like your friends most likely don’t
[–]labyrinthlilith -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
True. You aren’t wrong. Initial attraction is usually based on looks/physical appearance.
With my ex, we talked online for a few months and on the phone for a few weeks before meeting. So I already vibed with him and liked his personality, sense of humor and the way we interacted together.
When we met, we just clicked and the fact that I felt comfortable around him was what made me like him so much.

You should build some muscle regardless. A lot of rock climbers train calisthenics for the carry over.

I work out 5 times a week and eat pretty much what I want. Abs are clearly visible.
[–]borko781 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Do you consume alcohol every now and then? And how come you eat what you want? Do you mean you stay in a deficit so you dont gain weight?
[–]triqerinoir 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I do consume a lil bit of alcohol from time to time with friends but not really a fan of it. I am trying to stay in a surplus for more muscle gains. Good healthy food tho. Junk food maybe once or twice a week.

Nice post, great write-up, and good job! I have a huge respect for anyone who makes the effort and gets results and doesn't once lace in excuses. Kudos bro!
Just my opinion
IME activity level and challenging yourself beats the hell out of diet every time.
Anecdotal too but;
For most of basic training everybody had a huge caloric intake, and a challenging activity level but nowhere near enough to justify the calorie intake by the numbers....yet somehow everyone just started gravitating toward ideal weight ( whether that was up or down)

Face matters. Especially the eyes. A guy with an ugly face but low body fat percentage isn’t necessarily going to do better than the guy with a great face and striking eyes but higher body fat percentage
