not sure if this is the best response, but i generally just 'turn on the charm' and try to win over the friend too. its not a scenario i have a lot of experience with, but in the past ive managed to get the numbers of both of them at times, or at least to chill out the 'sidekick' enough to be laughing at my jokes and okay with me hanging out in their group.

Learn how to properly talk to groups of women. It’s disrespectful to a “pretty” girl’s friend to be ignored. The friend will let her know she’s not being a respected through tonality and body language and if she’s a smart friend she’ll choose her friend over you since guys like you will be dime a dozen.

That reflects poorly on you since that means you don’t really know how to properly handle yourself.

When you introduce yourself and ask for the girls name, right after do the same with the friend. Include the friend in the conversation.

So if she’s the less attractive friend by a lot she may be doing it because she’s jealous and wants to take away from her friend being hit on, or she might just be protective of her friend. How to handle it? I would say as annoying as it is, try include both of them in the conversation for at least a portion. So the sidekick can get your vibe and see you’re not some creep trying to get with her friend. I would say just be friendly, even though the sidekick is being a bit of a pain in the ass 😂

Most likely she is jealous, either she is not being approached, or she wants to interect with her friend herself. The best solution is to also pay her some attention, or even better to find some handsome wingguy to potentially polarise her energy.
