I've been doing improv for about 5 years now and I've noticed some overlap between the two. And I would like to share what I've learned and how it has improved my interactions.
First I'd like to clarify that improv is a process and not a thing. Improv can be comedy, can be jazz. Can be rap, and more. But more importantly it is a skill that can be taught. Teaching you how to present in the moment, none outcome dependent, having fun and working together to develop a connection.
So without further ado here 7 steps of improv.
1) Play - Engage in things that are genuinely fun and you like. Because the moment we take things to seriously it becomes work. This is life! We don't know how much time we have left on this world. So might as well do things we want to do.
2) let yourself fail/get rejected - accept that failure/rejection is natural. The moment you fear failure/rejection. It will paralyze you. Either by leaving you analyzing ever single thing or by your imagination picturing an apocalyptic outcome. Failure/rejection is a way of refining your experience and skills.
Remember because you fail it doesn't mean you are a failure.
As well learning how to fail gracefully is charming. The more you learn how to accept your rejection or failure. Shows little to no outcome dependence, and that goes a long way. Plus it also gains then on your side.
3) Listen- I've had the hardest time with this step. Because this step requires you to listen with your whole being. And when I get anxious I just blabber on and on. So the biggest point I had to learn was don't just listen till you have something to say. But listen and be willing to change. Take your personal ego and pre-judgements out of the equation. And listen openly to what they have to say.
4) Say yes!- by saying yes you're going to go places. In improv you are taught to accept offers from your partner on stage. You are both working together to make a story. So if a girl puts out an offer to an experience, say Yes!!! Also saying yes doesn't just mean say yes to the experience. But also support and react about what they are talking about. Nodding your head saying yes just supporting then to talk helps.
5) Yes! And - after accepting the offer add on!!! By contributing to the conversation, experience or emotion you are creating an connection with the other person. Also to note don't overly add, give some room for the other person to also be excited and build on the interaction.
6) Play the Game - anything that has a set of rules is a game; abide by the rules and have fun play within them. Let the rules guide your impulses in a creative manner. To give you an example I was on a date with this girl who I promised before hand that I would take her dancing (that was my rule). But the date was a complete mess. I drove to the wrong place and we couldn't just leave cause we had already paid for parking so it would have been a waste of money plus it was expensive. So I decided to take her to my backup place. After searching for the place for most of the night we found out it got shut down. So we ended up making the best of the situation by cologne shopping at a local drug store till 12:30 and then grabbed some tea at a pub around 1:30. we were about to call it a night but I wasn't going to end it like that. I was going keep my promise. So when we walked to my car I told her to wait outside .I popped in my Sam Cooke CD, rolled down my windows and cranked the volume to full. Took her hand and we slow danced till I lost track of time. The game: keep the promise. The rule: don't break it.
7) Relax and have fun!- relax and enjoy what both your life and interactions have to offer. Life is a series of events so don't burn yourself by taking to many of them so seriously. So enjoy yourself and enjoy the moment.
After reading a few of the comments I forgot to add a few more points.
8) when faced with a decision : pick the choice that always tells a better story.- Life and interactions often gives us decisions to make. And picking the more riskier choice leads to more reward. If you feel like fear has taken over you up ask yourself a few questions
A) think of a realistic outcome if you failed and ask "what if I failed?". Don't think of an apocalyptic outcome. Think of something realistic.
B) ask "how would I recover?" How would I recover from that failure
C)"what if I did nothing?" Like what if I didn't approach that girl. Or what if I didn't stop eating cookies and chips every morning.
D)" what if I succeed?" Like would you get a relationship out of it or a really memorable night.
We are dissecting that fear and turning it into motivation.
9) Body language - when the body leads the mind will follow and vice versa. So If you physically alter your body language into a positive one like super man with your back straight, standing tall and hands resting on your hips for 3 minute before you approach or go on stage. It mentally alters your perspective in a positive way . And I recommend doing this before you approach women too.
10) it's working together- either on stage or in an interaction your both working together. Don't get in the mind set that it's a competition and you have to conquer the other person. But it's working together. Assume the person having positive intention and they want you to succeed picking them up. It's going to change the way you handle the interaction, how you see them as well as the outcome too.
