I was told by people here that my interactions with women are too "friendly" and that I am friend-zoning myself. I did some reflecting on my past "kind-of-dates" and my other purposeful interactions with women in general, and I feel like the primary reason for my recent failures is that I always open in a friendly manner. So then, when I ask them out, the vibe continues to be friendly, even though I verbally establish interest by complimenting her appearance, hair, outfit, etc. While these outings went well (as in fun and not boring), they never quite went anywhere because they started off on the wrong foot.

I think I might be a bit of "nice guy". What do you think of my self-assessment and how should I about establishing interest early on? My main places for meeting women are my school's events btw.
