I have a coffee shop interaction story as well, but this time it was a woman trying to open:

Inside the coffee shop there is an arrangement of two leather chairs opposite a leather couch with a long low table in between. I was occupying one of the chairs, and there was a man opposite me on the couch. We were both on our laptops and minding our own business. A middle-eastern looking woman, likely around 40 years old and with the whole head wrap thing going on, but face showing, walks in and enquires if the other leather chair is free. I indicate that it is and she sits down. She seems a little fidgety, and sure enough within 5 minutes she is trying to engage the guy on the couch in small talk. Right from the get-go it is clear to me that this dude has no interest in talking to this woman; he's answering politely enough but clearly in a 'leave me alone' kind of fashion which is emphasized by his occupation with his laptop. Anyways, the woman doesn't get the hint and keeps asking him all kinds of boring questions, 'where are you from' 'how long have you lived here' 'what's your nationality' blah blah blah. After forcing about ten short responses from this guy it falls to an awkward kind of silence where she's looking for reciprocity but isn't getting it. This lasts for about 2 minutes before she stands up and reaches in her bag...and emerges with an Inuit puppet! She puts the puppet on and adopts this falsetto voice, like you would use to entertain small children with a puppet, and starts bouncing the puppet up and down about 10 inches from the side of this guys head asking 'have you tried the local fish? It's really good! etc'. You should have seen the look on this guys face...frozen in shock on the couch staring wide eyed at his laptop screen scared to even look at her! After about 30 seconds that felt like an hour she kind of laughs and puts the puppet away...he doesn't say a word! Just a total WTF moment. She sits down for a minute, then gets up to get a coffee or something and the dude asks me if I knew who that was. Nope. He's like, 'I'm outta here man' and packs up his laptop and takes off.

Anyways, I ended up talking to her a bit after that because I felt bad for her...she just seemed like a lonely person with absolutely 0 social sense.

tl;dr: lady with puppet scares the pants off some guy in a coffee shop

Maybe that approach was not very smooth, but for all you know he is doing seddit's /r/100sets challenge and trying to improve. So don't fault the guy. It's like another interpretation of "don't hate the player, hate the game" except in this case the game kinda sucked :)

I don't think this sub should really be about ripping on afc's, spesh as some people didn't have that kind of confidence to hit on so many people despite blatantly failing. even though the guy is somewhat pest like at least he made effort after effort despite rejection, which is admirable

Always good to have the temperature of the room and the people you are talking to. But never get obsessed with it.

On a related note, what are your approach techniques in a coffee shop? I hang out there as well a lot of the time, and approaches can sometimes be hard for me to wrap my head around in that environment - do you walk up to the table, call across the shop, or what?
