I’m trying to understand why my mind goes blank in certain situations when I want to approach women, and how to become better at starting conversations naturally without always needing to be extremely direct.
Let me give some real examples and some hypothetical situations I keep thinking about.
Real situations I’ve experienced
One example: I’m at the beach and I see two very attractive women tanning pretty far away from me. My mind immediately goes blank. I don’t know what I would even say, and the idea of walking all the way across the beach just to approach them feels awkward and creates a lot of pressure in my head.
Another example: I was recently at the movie theater, standing in line, and a couple of lines away I saw a woman who looked familiar, almost like a celebrity from my country. I was in a hurry, but even if I had more time, I had no idea how I could naturally start a conversation with her.
At the gym there’s a woman I find very attractive. I tried making eye contact with her, but nothing really happened. I kept trying to think of something I could say that wouldn’t sound weird or forced.
One idea I had in Hebrew was basically:
“I don’t know what you’re doing, but you’re killing it. You look like you came straight out of Pinterest.”
But then I start overthinking whether compliments are a bad way to open, whether it sounds try-hard, whether she’ll know immediately that I’m hitting on her, etc.
Bars are actually easier for me because I can just walk up and say:
“Hi, what’s your name?”
The problem is what comes after that. I often don’t know what to say next, so the conversation can quickly become generic and boring.
Another situation is when I see a woman walking toward me on the street. I don’t know how to start a conversation without being completely direct and basically announcing, “I stopped you because I find you attractive.”
I once approached a group of women sitting at a café or restaurant and said something like:
“Hey, I was sitting over there and I saw you. You looked interesting. What’s your name?”
Because I felt like I was interrupting their conversation, I quickly asked for her number instead of actually creating a conversation.
I did something similar at a restaurant once, but because I was stressed I basically yelled the opener instead of saying it calmly.
There was also a birthday party where there was one woman that a lot of guys seemed interested in. She was talking with a group of male friends of mine. I joined the group, but once I was there, I had no idea how to go from being “another guy in the group” to actually creating a more personal or flirtatious interaction with her.
Another time I approached a foreign woman at a bar. I started a conversation, suggested that we sit down, and she said she wanted to go back to her friends. I did eventually get her number, but later I saw her being physically close with another guy. That whole situation made me think about how to handle conversations when there are other men around and how not to become intimidated by perceived competition.
I’ve had another situation where I had already spoken to a woman at a bar, but later I saw her standing with two men. I wanted to approach her again, but I froze because I didn’t know how to enter that interaction naturally.
I’ve also noticed that this happens to me in general when a woman is surrounded by men. I start feeling like I need some kind of perfect entry instead of just joining the interaction normally.
Another recurring problem is that I do sometimes approach successfully, but then the interaction becomes completely platonic and generic. I’m capable of talking to people, but sometimes I feel like I’m just having a normal friendly conversation with no flirtation, tension, playfulness, or direction.
Situations I’ve thought about or want to become capable of handling
I want to know how to create attraction in environments where openly “hitting on someone” isn’t necessarily socially expected.
For example, at work or in a shared environment where I see someone regularly. I don’t want every interaction to feel like a cold approach, but I also don’t want to automatically become just another friendly acquaintance.
The same applies to structured environments with hierarchy or professional boundaries. How do you handle attraction when you have to stay socially aware and respectful, and you can’t just treat the situation like a nightclub?
I also think about approaching someone at a gym, where they may be focused on training and where interrupting someone can easily feel intrusive.
I think about street approaches a lot. Someone is walking somewhere, I have no shared context with her, and I somehow have to create a reason for the interaction to exist.
I’ve also wondered how this changes in a busy city street where everyone is moving quickly and you don’t want to look like you’re using some rehearsed pickup line.
Another situation is approaching someone sitting with friends at a café. Do you address the whole group first? Do you speak directly to the person you’re interested in? How do you avoid making everyone feel like they’re waiting while you try to hit on one person?
The same thing applies to restaurants, especially when someone is seated and already involved in a conversation. Approaching feels much more intrusive than talking to someone standing next to you at a bar.
Parties are another example. There are lots of people, conversations are constantly changing, and the person you’re interested in may already be talking to other people. I often don’t know how to enter and then gradually shift into a one-on-one interaction.
The beach is another situation I keep thinking about because there may be almost no natural reason to walk across the entire beach and start talking to someone.
Another one is a woman wearing headphones. To me, that immediately feels like a physical signal that she doesn’t want to be disturbed, so I don’t know when approaching would be appropriate.
I’ve also thought about situations where a woman is with one male friend. I don’t know whether he’s her boyfriend, friend, brother, or something else, and I don’t want that uncertainty to stop me automatically.
The harder version of that is when she’s in a group of men. I don’t want to enter with the mindset that I need to “beat” the other guys or compete for attention, but I also don’t know how to establish myself naturally in the interaction.
I also notice that I overthink approaches much more when I perceive the woman as extremely attractive, high-status, or someone who probably gets approached all the time. My brain starts telling me that a normal approach won’t be enough because she probably meets confident, attractive, successful men constantly.
I’m also interested in social-circle situations, where I meet someone through mutual friends. Those situations should theoretically be easier because there’s already social context, but I still want to understand how an interaction becomes flirtatious instead of automatically becoming friendly.
And then there’s the step after getting a number. Sometimes I can get contact information, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I created enough of a connection for anything to happen afterward. I want to understand how to create an actual interaction before jumping straight to asking for a number.
So I think my overall issue is this:
I don’t necessarily have a problem physically walking up to someone in every situation. My bigger problem is that I often feel like I have no mental map.
I see someone I’m attracted to and my brain starts searching for the perfect opener.
Then, even if I approach, I’m not always sure what I’m trying to do next.
How do I go from:
Noticing someone → starting naturally → having an interesting conversation → becoming playful/flirtatious → seeing whether there’s mutual interest → continuing the interaction or exchanging contact information?
