Here's my tips

Start convos with EVERYONE. Waiting at the bus stop, cashier, that co-worker you never talk to, someone in your class.
Questions are bad, people with no game will overuse them.

"Do you come here often, what do you do for work, are you blah blah"

Some things I do instead

Make statements/guesses about her. Instead of "What do you do for work?"..."I'll say...You look like you're a teacher, you have this save the world vibe about you"
Tell DHV stories that are related to the topic.
Tease her. Keeps things playful, builds attraction
make sure you are kino'ing at the appropriate times.
watch videos and learn from other guys. Like...Hank from Californication has great game. You can learn basics from other guys

But yea practice, practice, practice

Simple question that always helps me: "What kinda things do you do for fun?" From there I just build off what they say...has worked well so far =]

Same sticking point here as well. As you mentioned, I always find myself stumbling back onto the boring topics of jobs/major/etc.

I'm pretty good at steering the conversation to the other person (when I'm paying attention), so that she talks about herself. Problem is, what is she's talking about something negative? (like her job). I find it hard to steer her away from negative feelings when she's opening up. I want to listen, but at the same time, I don't want to be an emotional punching bag. How do you walk the fine line?

I honestly don't care about their job/major/whatever, I want to know who they are as people and what makes them tick.

When they go job interview tell them this, verbatim, replacing their with people's.
