This one’s a first.

Went out on a first date with a girl a week and a half ago. Great first date she seemed cool and it was really fun. We planned to do dinner end of last week but she got caught up with work and had to reschedule.

Date is tomorrow and I’m not a big texter, especially early on in dating. I’d rather talk in person. Most of our texting has been just setting up the dates.

She just called me out on it.

“Hey can I ask you something? Have you been too busy or are you not a really good texter?”

I’ve been debating how to respond. In all the years I’ve dated I’ve never had someone call me out on this.

Truth is I don’t like to text early on when dating. We don’t know each other that well. I feel the lack of emotions, intonations, facial expressions behind it leaves too much open to interpretation when you don’t know someone that well and can do more damage than good. A joke or playfulness can easily be misinterpreted via a text.

How would you respond here?

I’ve been debating saying what I said above, trying to joke about it, or just saying I’ve just been busy. I feel like it’s one of those questions that can burn me no matter what I say.

I feel me being blunt that I don’t like texting someone I just met much and would rather talk in person could have her interpret it as me ignoring her.

Me saying I’m a bad texter could be a deal breaker for her. I’m not a bad texter with someone I know well.

Me saying I’m busy could possibly work but send up a yellow/red flag that I’m bsing her.

Maybe a combination of these? How would you respond?
