Because you are ignorant in the subject matter and by doing so you only embarrass yourself and the quality of discussion decays. If you feel like commenting about anything, you should know something on the topic, most redditors commenting here do not - at least more than college intro to psych. Last you checked? Where did you check? Who are these people encouraging you to comment on something you are ignorant about?
And I my former commentary was that all these people critizing the quote are shitting on something cool just because they have a negative preconceived notion about Freud - which inhibits them to see past that and enjoy the quote itself

My opinion on commenting without a degree or serious job in the field a person is commenting on, is that it is okay to do research, which is what the internet is for, and learn about it to make a well thought out reply. I would even go so far as to say that necessitating that a man has had 4+ years knowledge in the material he is opining about is extremely detrimental to your growth as a person, because most information posted on this here message board is not posted by people with long experience in their subject field. Most material here is posted by people with a passion for what they are posting, and a penchant for learning about things from the multitudes of academic and quasi-academic sources floating around the internet. This is not to say that you should go around believing everything you read on the internet, it is to say that you should take what you read with a grain of salt, and to please not tell people not to post their opinions just because of their lack of degree or career in the field of interest.
Also you just got mad at somebody on the internet.

It's basically about approach anxiety/getting yourself friendzoned. Except he uses terms geared more toward long term commitment. You're so afraid of being ignored/rejected that you won't take a chance, but you still want to be around the person you have feelings for so you hang out with them and do them favors and whatever else even though not being with them is killing you inside.

The thing about Freud is that he was not afraid to engage in the creative process. This is a great quality to have as a pioneer in the field, but a lot of his ideas were not developed as well as they should have been to be considered science.
To offer a counter point, quantum physics is far more bizzare than Freud's theories, but physics does not engage with our sexuality, so there is far less discomfort involved in thinking about it. Don't dismiss an idea just because it strikes you as bizzare, but because it does not accurately represent reality.

In this instance the word "theory" means "model that accounts for a set of observations", as opposed to the colloquial definition-- a guess. Saying
they were recognized for what they are - theories.
confuses the two meanings. The appropriate analog to the word "guess" in science jargon is "hypothesis". You could argue that Freud's theory was based on a faulty or unproven hypothesis, and I would probably be on board with you. Claiming that a theory is undermined because it is just a theory is a misunderstanding of what the words mean in an academic context.

Don't take it 100% literally. It's relevant in that humans feign apathy or refuse to invest emotionally into other people, especially those of their affection, as a means to protect themselves from the inevitable pain of rejection or unreciprocated feelings that may arise in a relationship. We tell ourselves in some way that it is a bad idea to become more intimate or involved with another person or at least show them how we feel because they may not feel that same way, and that hurts.
