Short Answer: Gaming solo is easier. When most guys start in "the game" they develop a crutch. Usually it's either a wing or alcohol. This will distract you from focusing on self improvement and evenually pulling. Get selfish. So, if you really would like to start in the right direction, start with day game by yourself.
The other thing to remember is to boil everything down to its lowest common denominator. First, focus on approaching. I imagine your AA is quite high at this point, right? Well, we need to break that. I recently gave this advice on one of the forums i moderate: - Do daily affirmations to boost your self image - Do something cool with your hair ... or at least clean it up a little - Talk to at least 5 new people a day (not game, just chat) - Count to three in your head, and then start walking toward the woman you want to talk to.
Is this enough to get a start? I'll have a new video up today which shows an extremely simple approach. Look for it this evening:

Hey. Thanks for the informative reply. Getting alcohol crutch is not going to happen as I don't drink. It actually makes me even more tense, although making my friends as an excuse to avoid talking to a girl, Yes, that probably would happen.
I did some day game as a practice, but it's the 3 seconds that don't work for me, I always found excuse not to go, well, not to go in first 3 seconds, I got like 50% rate of talking to a random girl so far but it was after much longer. It's the tension of it that basically strips me out of all my confidence. But I'm trying, I just thought the "night" game would be easier than a day game as most of the people in the bar consider getting laid that night an option anyway. What I was really looking in this post was to someone tell me what to expect from a night game, how the environment treats you, do and do nots, but I guess I'll just have to find out.
Btw, thanks a lot for your video, I'm confident I could do the same, it's just the first approach that really throws me off, but it looks really simple and not nothing I haven't done before, except then it wasn't planned and picked, but rather happened naturally. Dunno why forcing and talking to a girl whenever I want to do it not when it just happens is the hardest part of this "game". I envy you for your approach confidence:)
edit: oh yeah and I care about my image, I do it for myself, I like myself for exactly who and how I am, and I care about things I like. plus some one told me some time ago: "Always leave the house like you would meet the love of your life that day". It kinda stuck with me.
I always talked to all the people I meet during the day naturally, cashiers etc,. that's not a problem. Problem starts when I start to care about the outcome. God it's annoying.

Was that you in the video picking up those three chicks on the UC campus? Do you ever follow up with those chicks with boyfriends and go on double dates, or were you just demonstrating getting the number for the video?
[–]ikkake 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I think the point of exercise was to get 3 number in under 25 minutes, which is impressive considering the girls had boyfriends. I don't think he had intention of following any of those up, but would be cool to find out.
[–]noumenor 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah, that is impressive. I was just thinking that the double dating is an interesting networking idea, but is it realistic? It seems kind of out there to me.
[–]pualive 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Didn't do doubles with any of these girls, but i have before. The point i'm trying to emphasize is always go for the number no matter what. It becomes a habit.
That was me. Actually all three of those were just for demo. I had a girl friend at the time.

IMO, day game is harder. It's harder to make shit happen in the first place (if you're not in an awesome situation, she's most likely not about to come home with you, so the best you can hope for is a number). It's fuckin great for conversations though, compared to night game. You get to converse with these girls who aren't drunk off their asses or trying to play any games with you. They're more "natural," so they interact with you like any normal person would with any other normal person.
Night game is a bit different because girls (and people in general) put up certain "shields." Hot girls are used to having guys cat-calling them and being perverts, so they try to protect themselves from that. And that's why the "indirect" approach (where you just start a normal, nonchalant conversation) is better for night game.
so fridays and saturdays are my sleep days. I tried myself in the day game but AA is quite overwhelming to the level of me not being able to keep up my normal confidence, but I'll keep trying, so I was thinking about moving into "Game's" more natural habitat.
Change all of that. Find a way to sleep at other times (don't give bullshit excuses for why you can't). Like someone else said, if you have huge AA problems during day game, start small by just asking for the time or some other innocuous shit. As you get more comfortable with it, start advancing into actual conversations.
how to start, how settle myself in, what to look for, and what to be wary off in the bar/pickup/club scene
IMO, gaming solo is much much easier (but that's because I'm used to it, and because most of my friends are mediocre at best in terms of getting with women -- they tend to hurt more than they help).
How to start: Go out (day or night) by yourself, and use situational openers. So if you're at Starbucks and the girl in front of you is ordering a certain drink, ask her why she likes that drink, or ask her to explain why it's good. Act like you're considering it (and you probably are already considering it, since most Starbucks drinks taste the same). She'll probably politely explain it to you (unless she's a huge bitch), and then if you want, you can develop a conversation from there. She might say "OMG the caramel flavor is amazing," and then you might want to tease her about how much she likes that, or maybe comment on the fact that you also love caramel flavor, or even totally disagree with her opinion. Each of those options will probably lead to more conversation between you two. Act like you want to find out more about this girl. So act like a "detective" gathering info. That'll help.
What to look for: I gauge girls on their receptivity. If you don't have much experience with it, I can't really teach you how to do it. But basically, if the girl looks like she's having a good time, and looks like she'd be open to conversation, and looks like someone who would mesh well with me, then I focus on her. If she's not that type of person, I usually try to find someone else who would be better for me before going back to that girl.
In terms of "being wary," I really couldn't tell you. Obviously you want to watch out for the club/bar skanks who go to the same place every night and fuck every other guy who's available. But I'll tell you that those girls aren't that common. They don't make up the majority, even at smaller bars. Even at smaller bars you'll find girls who are pretty promiscuous and shit, but they still have standards. At most clubs/bars, you'll see the same, assuming you actually talk to different people instead of making assumptions (though I just made an assumption, so whatever).
"Not been out in a bar like forever really." Dude, you're saying this as someone who was a bartender? Really? I've never been a bartender (though I've gone behind the bar to pour myself some drinks before), but I'm pretty surprised that you don't already understand some of the underlying social dynamics. Could you give some more detail about what you did as a bartender? Like how it applied to your personal life (if it did at all)?
[–]ikkake 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
That's some amazing post, really gave me some needed insight. Thanks a lot.
I started as a bartender 8 years ago, in one of the best bar then in the city I live, and to be fair from the "game" point of view, being a bartender was the easiest thing ever, I didn't even have to try. Things I could do as a bartender and get away with it never worked on the other side of the bar. But you must remember, that when you are a bartender, it's a job, you not out in the bar, you working your ass off 5 hours straight in 3 people deep bar sweating your ass off. When you get used to it, you can actually get to chat to people while working, that's when you are "good", but it takes time, and bartender/customer interaction is sooo much different than guy/girl - easiest way to explain it, well there are no "shields" you speak off, and even if there are but you really want that number, there is always "on the house" card, plus when you are warmed up, and you already talked to 200 people that night (taking orders, but still), talking to ANYONE is piss easy. I loved that job.
Problem is, when I wasn't working, when I'm not covered by the bar and not wearing uniform, AA comes back like a bitch, and considering I haven't been working for 5 years, and I'm not a person that enjoys going out too much, it doesn't really give me any confidence boost anymore - out of practice ;). Plus I never liked alcohol, so bars never had anything going for me, but the job was amazing :)
And I understand social dynamics VERY well, my final year dissertation was about non verbal communication, I love body language and psychology, I'm really good in social environments, always can find myself and talk to anyone at a parties, but I prefer to not go and be alone, people tire me very fast. All that given I don't give any fucks because when I actually start caring about an outcome or a person, my emotions are kicking in and AA, god I hate that, I really need to learn not to care in any situation.
[–]frogma 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Alright first: Separate yourself from your emotions, and learn to view them differently. Like if you're in love with a specific girl, take a second to think about why you like her (write it down if you want), and then take another second to think about the logistics of everything. "Do I want to marry her?" "Will our children be the greatest-looking people who ever lived?" "Will her mentality change as she gets older, and will I care?" "Will her physical characteristics change as we get older, and will I care?" "Will her sexuality change as we get older, and will I care?" Look at all of that stuff, and don't just think about it in terms of how infatuated you are at the current time. Try to see it from other points of view, and from future points of view. And if you don't like what you see, FUCKIN ACKNOWLEDGE THAT. Even acknowledge it to her -- even if it's something questionable like her weight-- bring that shit out into the open where you can talk about it. Don't stay quiet and assume shit will go perfectly. That's just a sign of insufficient communication in your relationship.
But dude, YEAH, take advantage of your bar experience. I know you've seen a ton of shit (a ton of shit) in terms of how people interact with each other when they're drunk). You've seen how girlfriends and boyfriends interact when they're not entirely coherent. Shit's crazy. If you're at a bar similar to the bar I go to, you've seen a number of legitimate fights that were wild as fuck (and you don't even know how they started -- or maybe you do know, and still can't explain how it evolved into a physical altercation). Shit's crazy.
Stop relying on your status though. Sounds like that's your main issue. Do you really think shit's gonna be any different if you simply tell girls "I'm friends with the mayor, blah blah blah"? NO, shit's not gonna be any different. And I don't recommend lying about shit like that (I happen to be friends with the mayor of my city and the mayor of the major city near us, so I had to mention it). If you present yourself in a certain way (especially to complete strangers), people will react to you in kind. If you present yourself as a fuckin badass who's also bartended for a number of years and all kinds of shit like that, that's how people will perceive you. That's a good thing. Just try not to take it too far to the point where you're constantly bragging about your exploits. As long as you avoid that, you'll probably be fine.
[–]ikkake 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, I didn't mean only in a relationship. When I drive friends car, which is awesome, I'm getting anxious and stressed because I care about outcome. When I want to pass a test I'm getting anxious as hell, because I care about outcome. When I want to pick up attractive woman, I'm getting anxious as hell because I care about outcome. When I don't care, I'm a star :) That's my biggest obstacle so far :/
Yeah, believe me or not, but most of this stuff happens behind a wall of thirsty customers, we don't see that much, like I said, it's a job. Only valuable experience I got is how to manipulate drunk people "brute force" to give me money, but I don't want to do that with potential partners or even one night stands ;)
Did I really come across as some one relying on my status? If yes, then I have to look into that. This part of your post seem to contradict itself a bit, maybe I'm misunderstanding though.
[–]frogma 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You came across as someone who was trying to "hide" their status, if anything.
I'll go ahead and make it known here that I have a lot of ties to the former mayor of Chicago (which also means I have ties to the current guy, and basically anyone else involved with the politics in that area -- because they're all friends with each other). That "technically" doesn't mean shit, but if you present it the right way, people respond positively to it, the same way they'll respond positively if you just casually mention that you were a bartender.
I just casually mention that I know certain people, maybe even give a little summary of their exploits a bit (because I've read multiple books about the Daleys and their friends), and people enjoy hearing that shit. If you're not outright bragging about it, you're good to go. It works the same way if you were a bartender (and IMO is actually better than the position I'm in, where I'm friends with certain people and have been to certain houses, but have no influence whatsoever when it comes down to it), whereas you're a guy who's held all the power in various different situations. That's a shitload of power dude. And I bet you think of it a lot differently than how I think of it. Just trust me, people respect your position as the guy who serves them drinks.
Even if worst comes to worst, you can always chastise whatever bartender for doing shit the "wrong" way. Or, you can be a gentleman about it, casually mention that you were also a bartender, and give some insight into that profession. People eat that shit up dude. They love hearing about the dynamics of it. And you should already know that -- I'm quite sure you do already know that, but I think you're trying to approach it from an outsider's POV and that fucks up your mentality.

Ah I see what you mean. Well I work in School now (Not as a teacher but for some reason people assume such all the time) and believe me, depending on the age of a woman, this tend to work much much better ;) Bartender probably would work better on girls, but I'm not that much into girls, I started to prefer women more, probably due to working in school I had to isolate myself from that. But yeah I think I might undersell myself quite a lot when I talk so that could be changed. Thanks.
I like this advice too.

I actually started to notice how many guys do solo at the bars and clubs. Before I was just either checking out girls or hanging with friends when I am out, after thinking about solo gaming for awhile I started to see guys just standing solo for a long periods of time. Might give it a shot this weekend.
[–]frogma 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Haha. Yeah, nobody ever mentions this. I go to bars all the time (usually solo unless I'm visiting friends at school), and you'll see fuckin thousands of guys who are also going solo (you just won't notice them if you're not looking for them). At smaller bars, it's usually older guys who do that, but at bigger bars, you'll see a whole mix of guys doing it. There's nothing wrong with it, and usually nobody's gonna be judging you for it. Thinking back on all the times I've gone out solo (which is literally most of the time), I've probably gotten called out on it maybe 10-15 times, out of the couple hundred (probably?) that I've been out. People usually don't give a shit, and if they do, they certainly don't confront me about it, so it's not an issue.
I mention it every time I comment on the good old "How do I go out solo" threads. The whole concept of it being strange or awkward is ridiculous if you start to notice how much people do it.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
There's nothing to worry about solo. No one you know is watching you, so you can do/try anything. It's definitely the best way to start, and you can figure out what works for YOU without any outside influences.

Hmmm that actually sounds like a decent idea, does it only remove anxiety or has other "high" effects? An I'm not sure it's good idea to start from dependence of a drug to be able to game, but I might give it a go.

You can manipulate your mind, and brain chemistry without resorting to chemicals, meditation, working out / running (few miles)/yoga/martial arts/whatever you're into ... before going out - will flood your brain with enough serotonin that you will need to last you a few hours, and its better than messing with the pharmaceuticals. My approach is to try everything before starting on the meds.
[–]ikkake 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, I'm not against drugs, but don't really try anything that comes into my hands without good research. And like I said I don't think training myself into thinking "I'm good at game but on drugs only" is good idea anyway.

Your Attention!!
Thanks for the interesting post. You brought up some good points that are common among most. In many ways I can relate to you. In my experience I've learned that when we think like this we tend to indirectly put pressure on ourselves. Meeting someone should go at a natural pace. Just because in the past your experiences could have started slower then your perception of average doesn't mean that you have to address the situation on an uncomfortable track. (I'm not exclaiming that you are either).
Here are something's you can do:
Read up some literature on body language and try and internalize the material and apply it to yourself don't just mimic.
Also if you want to find a GOOD girl that's compatible with you then you should recheck where youre looking for a girl.
Regardless of looking for a connection or just numbers try and invest your time into activities.
Examples: try learning a little art terms and look for local parades, art shows, festivals, try rock climbing gyms and become a regular, if you're good at particular sport like soccer or something try looking for an inter mural team around you.
You can do this. Be unique and target what YOU like and what YOU want to do. You don't have to drag urself into a bar on Friday or Saturday to find any type of companionship. Even if you're scarred shitless and your mind is telling you things like "you could have done it better, or stop you don't look natural" that's just one of the 5 voices in your head telling you that shit; dont listen. Be bold and confident, ask girls about themselves, enjoy it and youll have opportunity to manipulate but it will come naturally. And If you're doing it organically then their intuition will catch that and make them feel comfortable.
Have fun, you're doing a good job, just the fact that you wrote on reddit about this tells you that you're changing. Small steps. Give us an update!
[–]creativebaconmayhem 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
If you can find a guy who is on the same page, doing good PUA shit and trying to improve as well, you should have a wingman. I had a tough time getting solo game going at bars and clubs, unless I was in a place where I knew people. You should be working the room, and having someone you know around is comforting, and gives you social proof.
I had a tough time getting solo game going at bars and clubs, unless I was in a place where I knew people.
You are doing it wrong. After the first one or two nights you should be knowing people at the bar. Hell, I had nights I went home with more phone numbers of guys then girls.

I love this concept of playing with another person to see can you get her to liking you, it's not even the sex that really excites me,
THIS IS HUGE. Thats a big part of inner game. And doing it for lulz and being outcome independent is what separates the pros from amateurs who drop out as soon as they can get an ltr.
it's the game on it's own, but I'm totally inexperienced in "talking to girls" as my previous relationships usually started more naturally and slowly, and like I said I don't go out even recently, as I pretty much do two jobs, so fridays and saturdays are my sleep days. I tried myself in the day game but AA is quite overwhelming to the level of me not being able to keep up my normal confidence, but I'll keep trying, so I was thinking about moving into "Game's" more natural habitat.
day game is harder, but if you do it enough and go through enough approaches to it you will find something that works better than other stuff, the key here - is to make sure you get some positive reinforcement mixed in with all the work that must go into it.
but I'll be honest, this isn't leaving the comfort zone for me, it feels like jumping the comfort cliff with pointy discomfort rocks at the bottom.
thats how you know you're doing it right.
So I'm looking for some hints for first few nights, how to start, how settle myself in, what to look for, and what to be wary off in the bar/pickup/club scene, to lower my anxiety a bit. I think the main thing I need to focus on is fighting actual "not been out in a bar like forever really" kind, but is gaming solo actually harder than in a group or with some support?
go to types of establishments you actually like being in. that are frequented by people you like at least somewhat. Talk TO EVERYONE (guys/girls/whoever)!!! Talk to the paid staff - they almost have to be nice to you. When you talk to bouncers make it your goal to improve their day with your words/presence. I personally like to avoid all alcohol as much as possible but it takes me a few solo trips before i start going to 100% sober. Ultimately your game improves MUCH more if you avoid alcohol.
See I know that, I even exploit it when I don't care. But I still cannot turn off "caring" when I really want something or something is important. I guess it's just practice.
I don't know why but day game sounds so much more appealing to my interests..
that's how you know you're doing it right.
Yeah, got same shit at work :/
See? I didn't even realise that making yourself regular in a bar is so convenient, and then you made me remember how I treated my regulars. God now I even know how to make myself one. This is gold. Thanks man.
And yeah, I never liked alcohol, well.... love the taste and what you can do with it, hate the effect, makes me tense up and I'm loosing all confidence. Weird huh?

I feel awkward at a bar because I don't have a drink and therefore have no real purpose being there.
Stop. Everything after the first 3 words is just you justifying a choice you made (more specifically - not so much YOU - as your mind - engaging in a cognitive bias, where your mind justifies its own shitty tendencies to itself - meditation can help w/ this). I've had a friend who was in straight edge punk band - that guy seemed to never be awkward, and always partied harder than almost anyone i know. Straight Edge is a philosophy/music scene - defined by sobriety.
You dont want to be awkward? DONT BE. JUST BE CONFIDENT Its fine :) Ppl go to bars to drink not to watch others drink, sometimes they might want you to do shots w/ them just order shots of coke :) looks like jager :)
I'm curious what other's perspectives are on this. I've been thinking what I need to do is decide on a non-alcoholic drink I can purchase (seltzer and lime?) and at least "look" less awkward in the bar.
Soda and lime tends to be my choice, if i really need help with state - ill get somthing caffeinated like redbull or whatever. At first it does help to have something in your hand, but once you get totally unstifled you actually dont want to have ANYTHING in your hand so you can do more kino and physical expressiveness. If you want to get super silly just order girls shots of jager and yourself a shot of coke - its kinda dumb but can be really funny - especially once they find out that you're not actually drinking - but i guess its all in your ability to own it :)

Ha. Amen, brother. 36 here. All my friends are either 25 and in a different stage of life (and thus not interested in the same venues) or 40+ with kids (and thus not likely to go out).

I'd love to be in SF. Birmingham, UK here.
[–]AustralianMaverick 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
hey,
i think the best idea is to go out on your own, probably away from where you live.
I think some AA is based off people you know seeing you and judging. (to my thinking at least). just go out and have fun. dont drink to excess (or at all) and just ask dumb questions; one of mine last week was a question to 3 women about jack daniels.
To be fair, I'm much better with a friend around, as I'm really competitive in nature, and "Well if I wont do it, my friend will "win"", even if he doesn't know we are playing.
[–]easternone 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
What I usually do is go out with mates to a bar or club, so I've got them around but after a while, when I'm feeling social and in state, I'll break away and go and chat to someone, just to get the AA out of the way. The easiest thing is to crack a few lame jokes when there's an HB in earshot, usually gets you a nice in without direct approaching, and works really well in a bar setting. This then gives me an in, as well as an eject or the ability to make myself seem unavailable by going back to my group.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
No offense but this seems like so much more work than it's worth. The logistics of indirectly attracting someone just confuse the hell out of me.
[–]easternone 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Oh no I don't mean use that as a pick up, but to get warmed up. Generally when I'm out with friends I'm in a different mindset, and if AA gets to you opening a girl inadvertently with a joke directed at the bartender can work wonders.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Ah! Now it makes sense lol... I was like, 'Wait. I'm going to have to find a girl, then find some airhead to talk to next to this girl to indirectly attract her?' My mind was full of fuck at this point...
Thanks for clearing that up.
[–]easternone 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
haha, it's just an easy state shifting method that makes you feel like you've achieved more than talk to a waitress or something. I ended up getting massive IOIs from a bar tender this way, by flirting and joking with someone randomly, making the bar tender laugh and opening.
Nice man. I like it!
