The most important thing, I've found, is authenticity. You really can't fake this shit if you want to do it right. I'm only speaking from personal experience, so take this as the anecdotal evidence that it is. But picking up women became incredibly easy for me once I started caring about shit other than women.

Here's an example. Imagine a woman with large, perfectly shaped tits. She's used to getting attention for them. Now, you tell me what's more attractive. A dude who she KNOWS is thinking, at least every now and then, about how much he wants to suck on her tits(can't fake this shit, people smell bullshit from a mile away)

OR

a dude who she can't quite figure out whether he's thinking about sucking on her tits or about the fact that America is the richest country that has EVER existed, yet half of the country is poor (making less than $30k a year) and how fucked up that is.

I'm sure I'm over-simplifying; like I said, this is just MY perspective. But I genuinely have some shit to live for, and women are attracted to a man who has a life of his own.

Everything else, to me, is just surface-level. It's much easier to come from a place of authenticity and just be yourself (as cliche as it sounds) than to use tactics or whatever the fuck. Sure, it's helpful to understand some aspects of courting a chick. But it's vastly more important to be able to share the valuable perspectives that you as an individual have.

Calibration.

Be cocky with hot girls, not cocky at all with shy girls
Only make mad jokes when she already likes you
Be more cocky, when she just rejected you. *Don't be too cocky if she hasn't rejected you yet.
Be nice in the beginning, but not too much and not so much later
Show interest not too early, and only after you have been a bit cocky already and she sees you as superior

Took me years until I noticed when I can be cocky and when it completely fucks up everything.

It's about getting out there in the field and approaching women A LOT! And then going on a lot of dates. And then calibrating so that you improve what you are doing. I got good in a year and coach level in two because I was out talking to women nearly daily.

You said this: "...means you can more of less bang who you want (I obviously don't believe this, although I am somewhat of a newbie!)" So...you have a self limiting belief. If you believe that you can't get the women you want, it is true for you. Kill that belief.

Just a quick note on people who say it takes years to master game. It depends. Some people are social recluses who need to build up years worth of experience they should have already gotten from their childhood. Others just need a push in the right direction, getting over approach anxiety etc.

There is a difference between knowing information and truly internalizing it. Depending on a person's personal starting point, it will take them an individualized number of reference experiences to fully internalize attractive beliefs, behaviors and traits.

Many of the people that I see that have been in pick-up for years and have still only reached moderate inconsistent success at best, are not developing themselves as men and instead are only working on their "Game." They are focusing on perfecting running routines and scripts that mimic the behaviors of an attractive man, instead of actually becoming an attractive man.
