Analyses revealed that men are more isolated than women in the younger Add health sample, while women are more isolated than men in the older HRS sample. At all ages, men reported higher levels of social isolation compared to women. When taking into account marital and partnership history, the researchers found that men and women showed similar patterns of increasing isolation between ages 18-42, regardless of their partnership status.

Pretty obvious results for anyone here.

The cause maybe up for debate, but I think it has a lot to do with the requirements placed on men.

First imperative is to work, everything else is secondary.

Men pay a higher social price to take time away from their "work" to maintain relationships.

Well, I have to wonder about more in-group bias among women, along with how often I see women going out together, without partners/husbands, even when they have them.

In that study, the only women who felt more isolation were older women - when a lot more of the men have simply DIED OFF.. Again, the real victims of male deaths are women.

It looks to me like women are either conditioned to be, or just naturally are, more social. I mean, look at the higher danger that we worry about for lone women - even though, far as I know, men are actually physically assaulted about twice as often.

Hmm. Women think they're in greater danger than men are, when it's actually men who are in greater danger. The funny thing is, guys kind of take pride in actually being in greater danger. Some guys go out and face danger for no good reason at all, other than the thrill of it. Facing danger is what real men do. That's obvious from all the action and war movies that show us men risking their lives for their for a cause, for their group, and for women, especially.

This is a stretch, but I think it might be that girls grow up much more protected and physically cared for - loved, actually, than boys do. Or, at least, boys feel less loved. If so, what does that do for the ability of boys and men to connect to other people?

Seems that the study says that while women are lonlier when they're older and men are lonlier when they're younger, men are far lonlier than women at all ages.

That statement saying that older women are lonlier, they mean with respect to other women.

I do think that it's a take away from the "old days" where a man's career may have actually have had a significant social aspect to it, especially at the higher end of society.

The expectation is that work fulfills a man's social needs 100%. It's a fulfilling career, a social event, and a vacation all in one.

Thanks for clarification. Thinking about it, older women are likely lonelier that younger ones because spouses and friends have started to die off.

As an introverted guy, this is basically my life right now. Couldn’t get into the grad program I wanted (counseling, ironically to address men’s health), so now I’m working to pay off my loans for the next year to try the program again. Not really able to make friends at work and I don’t feel like I have enough time in the day to do the things I want in solitude. Plus, it costs money to go out and do basically anything with other people.

It’s rough out here my guy. Hell I wouldn’t mind just being on a bowling team. There’s gotta be something out there! Are we really all just sitting at home on our phones?!

Plus, it costs money to go out and do basically anything with other people.

It isn't just the money it's the lack of comradery. Tried doing that doing that for a few years. Joined a socialising group on Facebook and went out mostly to a pub called Wetherspoons

It was depressing af. I'd go home early and grab a pizza on the way back and just get drunk. I associated it with the phrase fade to black

[–]TheWorldUnderHell 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

A bar is the last place I would go to meet anyone.

[–]Agreeable-Raspberry5 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Especially a Wetherspoons.

Their meals are usually all right and they're usually quiet after 8-9pm 🤷‍♂️

Just don't interact with any other customers and you should be fine. There's way worse places out there

With little actual knowledge about them, it makes me think fondly of the pubs in English and other European countries. Places to go just to drink, hang out, and talk to people - all except the part where it encourages a lot of drinking.

On another platform I saw a woman actually claiming this harms women because lonely husbands with no male friends "burden" their wives with friendship. You can't make this stuff up.

[–]hshsgdve 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women and children are the real victims of war.

[–]GorchestopherH[S] 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh my goodness...

The general arrangement is that there is no time allowed in a man's schedule apart from work and family responsibilities.

The "burden" is that when a woman drags a man into a social situation, he doesn't have any friends there, and relies on the woman during that social situation.

How selfish.

[–]McGauth925 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Sounds like a clone of Hillary, again.

If we ain't burdening them, we're ignoring them, or opening up too little. There's a pattern, there.

What I find most interesting is this has incredible 65k upvotes on r/science. And the comments are overwhelmingly supportive as well.

Progress?

[–]MachoManShark 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

maybe. places like r/science, like much of reddit, are filled with feminists, but specifically feminist men who are lonelier than average. i've personally noticed that spaces like that tend to be considerably friendlier toward male issues than spaces with high concentrations of feminist women. that is especially. the case for issues like male loneliness which lots of reddit users have experience with, but also has the benefit of having been one of the issues deemed acceptable by feminism at large. (at least, by my entirely vibes-based assessment)

so, while i do think that progress is happening, (as judged by things like the support for johnny depp and the general vibe around gender issues) this particular case might be misleadingly good.

Ironically I just saw this over on r.science. I'm surprised they'd leave it up.

This shouldn't come as surprise to any one even casually aware of men's issues though.

Oh everyone's aware of it alright, they just don't like to be reminded of it. Its kinda like how people don't like to be reminded of the fact that their fancy new Iphone probably came from some human rights violating Chinese factory.

I have to think that this will be treated as an isolated problem for males, and basically, one that we cause for ourselves. Not many people, and next-to-no feminists, will include this in a larger pattern that shows us how much better females are treated in almost every way, and at every stage of their lives.

[–]Blauwpetjevalued LWMA contributor 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I can tell why in general (Dutch) people have a lot less friends than some decades ago. Individualism has gone rampant. The collapse of several social structures - church, neighbourhood, even school and workplace in a way - is obvious. But also: when people did a course when I was younger, sang in a choir, did volunteer work, visited a concert or other event, they often had more or less the aim to make new friends. Nowadays they just meet the people when they’re doing their thing together but it doesn’t occur to them to meet them elsewhere, let alone visit them at home. (When one did a course, etc., normally every member got a paper with everybody’s name, address and phone number. That’s now breaking privacy rules I’m afraid.) A new negative step is the demise of the drink afterwards. It used to be an important part of every getting together; the last few years virtually everybody has a quick drink and disappears, or even without that quick drink. Places to meet people who might become friends have to be invented and re-invented all the time. Why men are most affected? Maybe because when women are looking for new friends, they look mainly for other women, while men look for both men and women. Maybe women are quicker in calling somebody her ‘friend’, while men would take longer, still talking about an ‘acquaintance’. And maybe men had a disadvantage from the beginning, which hits harder now that times get tougher in general.

I have isolated myself by choice from family and friends. Some of them are toxic.
