What's the general concensus of the UNWomen's "HeForShe" movement?

Personally, following Emma Watson's Speech to the UN, I have mixed views. While I'm glad that Watson noted that the term "feminism" has become synonymous with man-hating, and noted that males are also confined to gender roles, the inequalities that men face weren't noted in Watson's speech, nor on the HeForShe website.

I feel a movement that aims to campaign for complete gender equality needs to address both men's and women's rights and at present, this HeForShe movement doesn't do that.

I have no idea what these people are offering me as a man other than the ability to be a footstool for the feminist global initiative. It's the equality movement for men to get women what they want, can I just tell the U.N that we already have that and have had it since day one of the human race?

Maybe we should all take a look at ourselves, a marginally attractive woman does what most feminists do (say "we're for men to!") and we all have a crisis of conscience?

Just seems to be the typical feminist bigotry and anti-male hatred. For feminists the word "equality" means only good stuff for women, only bad stuff for men. It's just the same with any hate movement, They often pretend to have liberal moral values while practicing discrimination.

Any movement for the advance of only one sex, and at that the sex already ahead, is sexist. The very fact that the UN has no "UN Men" but only a "UN women" tells the same story. The UN has been infiltrated by feminists in a lot of ways and it's practices are altogether corrupted with anti-male hate when it comes to any topic to do with gender, and in a lot of cases even when it's just generic humanitarian aid.

The title of the movement is supposed to tell people that only women care about equality and men are assholes who need to do the right thing. So even the very title is a deliberate calculated denigration of an entire birth group. That's the purpose of this sort of thing -- spreading hate. It's not about helping anyone, not even privileged women.

I just had a look at the HeForShe site and if you scroll to the bottom, it appears to be sponsored by JP Morgan Chase and Barclays. What do you suppose they're getting out of this?

Since the general consensus is that since Emma Watson and this organization aren't going 50/50 for the equalization of men's rights and women's rights then the organization is misguided.

Although I agree with this, I also like to see that this is one of the first times I've seen an organization this influential has even mentioned men's rights and the wrongful feminism.

On the other hand, this organization's goal is to make men into feminists which can obviously be misinterpreted for the worst.

I notice that the only languages are English, French and Spanish. Strange that they dont they need to target places like India, the Muslim world or Africa in their quest for women and girls.

I'm sure it is well intentioned, but I can't help but suspect that this is going to be another "let's pretend to care about helping men in order to get more men to help women" campaigns, as 'feminism for men' so often tends to be.

Every survey carried out in the UK shows that females instigate more domestic violence against men than the other way around. Mens life expectancy is from 5 to 20 years less than women in every country of the world.

More men and boys are raped around the world than women and girls.

Men commit suicide at 4 times the rate of women.

Most men in the world are conscripted into the army to die for their country.

Every country's laws punish men more harshly. Singapore only canes men and boys.

I could go on.

Why the hell should men do any more for women? It is time for women to do something for men.

Don't have much of an opinion yet. Flatly, I've heard the same song and dance before.

Feminism means equality, it's in the dictionary.

Ok great, but what does that mean in practice? Every organization has flowery motives superficially. 'Separate but equal' was supposedly about equality. If a feminist movement wants my support, it's going take more than a speech or two saying 'oh you're just wrong feminism is equality for both genders'.

I like that the recent speech mentioned parenting issues for men, but it failed to make any sort of meaningful stand on any issue that could arouse controversy.

She's emphasizing the notion that gender norms are oppressive to men and entirely socialized, which is nothing new. The only way to fight this is to come out swinging for traditional masculinity, whether it's a male that's embracing it or a butch lesbian. Nothing wrong with being butch.

Or maybe she's speaking on behalf of other women and simply rehashing the debunked pay gap... who knows... either way, this speech is lame and her lame ass emotional reading is lame too... all the white knights jumping on the bandwaggon are embarrassing...
