It's horrible to think medical coverage would only cover you if you were a certain gender. Legislation like that shouldn't be allowed in medicine. If your life depends on it, don't hinder it due to arbitrary gender reasons. Period. I hope the man gets through this and hopefully either sues the company or gets through with a public donation.

Though Johnson wouldn't normally qualify for Medicaid in the state of South Carolina because he is a single, non-disabled man with no children,

What the fuck?

[–]dontkickthedog 55 points56 points57 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think the word is expendable.

[–]geniice 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nah. The problem is he has a job which puts him over the income threshold (said threshold is very low).

Ever been a single, non-disabled man with no children trying to get state benefits for anything?

You're so low on the totem pole, you're underground.

Technically I'm a single, (temporarily) disabled man with no children who's sole income is state benefits.... In Denmark.

[–]Clockw0rk 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well there's your problem, you live in one of dem commie socialist countries. /s

Seriously though, it's totally fucked over here in the US. There's a reason our homeless men outnumber homeless women 4 to 1. Likewise with suicide numbers.

I lost my job and my place to stay about 7 years ago. I applied for food stamps. I got 20$ a month. Thats not even enough for ramin and beans...

Without that underground anchor it falls over

[–]McFeely_Smackup 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I went to college as a single, white, non disabled man, and let me tell you the financial aid options were endless. As long as you consider "pay up" and "go the fuck home" to be endless options.

You're so low on the totem pole, you're underground.

You're what the pole is resting on.

Men being seen as disposable unfortunately isn't just a phrase, it's reality not only in social environments but in legislation as well.

In life men are the crumple zone, and women and children are the passengers.

[–]Diesel-66 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Medicaid is only for people with disabilities, poor children, or poor pregnant women.

It was expanded to all poor people under the aca but many states did not expand it because it will cost them a lot of money.

[–]FuggleyBrew 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It also covers women with breast and cervical cancer up to 250% of the federal poverty limit and has since 2000.

[–]Krissam 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Okay, well, that's a little more reasonable, the way it was written just made it sound like he would've qualified if he had been married, disabled, female or had children.

[–]elokr 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My dad couldn't even qualify for disability after an on the job accident. The lady straight up told my parents that my dad was white, educated, and relatively young so he could find another job.

I forgot, nobody ever gets laid off, nobody ever needs to eat between jobs, and all jobs pay a living wage. Thanks for reminding me that we really live in Narnia.

as should women with children the receive child support

[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics 24 points25 points26 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

He should just cash one of his male privilege checks. That ought to cover it.

[–]unklestinky 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Can I get me one of them?

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You'd think with how few men get it, that it would be covered just out of the fact it wouldn't take up that many resources even if all men who had it used it.

I don't see why it would be gendered at all to begin with. This is ridiculous.

"We treat people, including men, with breast cancer who have Medicaid all the time," Weiss said.

When there's an unusual case with HHS, she said, it's a matter of being persistent, making several calls, and speaking to a lot of people until you reach the right one that will take the case, she said.

"I've never had a male denied national insurance [because] of their gender," said Weiss, who is based in Philadelphia.

Well, you shouldn't have to keep contacting people until you get someone to bend the sexist rules to begin with. Someone going through with cancer treatment, shouldn't have the added stress of all that because of discrimination.

Poor guy.

You mean how the cost of Tubal Ligation is covered more or completely by obamacare, But when it comes to a vasectomy it says fuck you.

Probably a case of people just not thinking things through. Someone puts an exception into the law to deal with a high profile cancer and forgets that it can happen to both genders.

Thank you for that, it's uplifting.

[–]snert_blergen 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

How do you do one of those funding things for one person. Kickstarter... but not?

[–]FritzLn 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

gofundme?

[–]snert_blergen 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
