If there is a real assault there should be a real criminal trial. Sorry, but a school "hearing" just doesn't cut it.

This is a school disciplinary hearing - not a criminal trial. As I understand it, if it's a state school, then the accused has a due process right to notice and a hearing, but not much else. The standard of proof required by most schools is a "preponderance of evidence," not the higher "reasonable doubt" standard used in criminal cases. The gravest penalty is expulsion, not prison time.

The issue is that only 10-25% of students who are found responsible (not accused) of sexual assault by college disciplinary hearings are expelled.

what they found is a disturbing unwillingness to seriously sanction students accused of assault, even if those students are found “responsible” (the college policy equivalent of a guilty verdict). Of all of the sexual assault cases that went through hearings at these 130 schools, only 10 to 25 percent of the students found responsible were actually expelled.
