What's a good comeback for the "well, we make babies" cop-out? As in, what can I say when I bring up an instance of female privilege, and it is defended with this?

Might also want to include transsexual too.

[–]Legolas-the-elf 4 points5 points6 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That would be a different question though; you can have straight/gay/bi/other trans people too.

You probably want something like the following:

  • Sexual orientation: heterosexual/homosexual/bisexual/other
  • Gender-conformity: cis/trans/genderqueer

Even that's pretty restrictive - nothing in there about the various types of asexuality, for instance.

[–]CedMon 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gender-conformity: cis/trans/genderqueer/other

But that might be offensive, I'm not actually sure.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 13 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

I've gotten the impression there are a significant number of gays here.

What has given you this impression?

(Forgive me for stereotyping, but just like there are a lot of lesbians who are feminists, I almost expect gays here.)

Oh. This is mens rights, so if youre a man, then this is the place for you. (Where you like to stick your penis for sex is not really an issue over here)

I think the opposite of you. I think gays tend not to find a home here since a good portion gay males dont identify themselves with the male gender. Just the term "Mens Rights" tends to scare off people with even the slightest feminine inclinations.

[–]Eryemil 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

What has given you this impression?

Another gay dude here; there are more of us than you might think and that goes for the "mainstream" MRM as well. As I mentioned in another post, gay/bisexual men are, for example, overresented among the writers of A Voice for Men which is probably our most influential website.

[...] gay males dont identify themselves with the male gender.

Gay men tend to have a rather complex relationship with masculinity and heterosexual men in particular. Many of us, myself included, suffered quite a lot of bullying as a result of things that would have set us apart well before we ever understood that we were even homosexual.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Another gay dude here; there are more of us than you might think

Yeah, there might be more of us straights here than you might think. So now whos right? I can make over generalizations about the way you think too. I just choose not to do it since it reeks of belittlement and snobbery.

I didnt know that one MRA website has a lot of gay writers for it. Ok.

Gay men tend to have a rather complex relationship with masculinity and heterosexual men in particular. Many of us, myself included, suffered quite a lot of bullying as a result of things that would have set us apart well before we ever understood that we were even homosexual.

Thanks for proving my point. Also you can understand why some "breeders" distance themselves from gays knowing that some gays are emotional time bombs waiting to go off.

[–]Eryemil 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, there might be more of us straights here than you might think.

What a ridiculous thing to say. There are probably about as many heterosexual men here as in the general population, so exactly the amount I expect there to be—98 to 95% of the subscribes.

Also you can understand why some "breeders" distance themselves from gays knowing that some gays are emotional time bombs waiting to go off.

Why the hell are you so hostile? You seem to be taking the fact that we have quite a few gay/bi posters as some sort of personal insult.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, there might be more of us straights here than you might think.

LOL! I said exactly what you said to me but said straight instead of gay. So much for equality.

Why the hell are you so hostile? You seem to be taking the fact that we have quite a few gay/bi posters as some sort of personal insult.

Stating a fact why people avoid gay people is hostile? Or are you just attempting to avoid a converstaion by being offended? Yep, i think thats it.

Again, you can see in your response why people would want to avoid gay people. Often when someone tries to have any kind of meaningful conversation, its met with false accusations of being "Hostile". Im surprised you didnt just jump right into "hate crime" accusations.

This is a major reason why there is a schism between gay MRAs and straight MRAs. Youre perpetuating the problem in your previous post by attempting to derail the conversation.

I think its a real problem that gays refuse to address (that straight people are afraid of going to jail for hate crimes and be accused of being hostile at every turn when theyre around gay people)

[–]Eryemil 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

This is a major reason why there is a schism between gay MRAs and straight MRAs.

What schism? The only person that needs to deal with their persecution complex here is you. Have a nice day.

I'm flattered Jeremiah, I'll even upvote you.

Now when was the last time someone hugged you in a loving way? Maybe you wouldn't be so cranky if you had someone to really care about you.

Feel free contact me if you want to talk about anything.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What schism?

The one you referenced yourself when you explained how gay people dont feel comfortable around straight people. Remember? You just said it.

The only person that needs to deal with their persecution complex here is you. Have a nice day.

You are very offended and I can tell thats your general M.O. to avoid having a conversation.

No, please continue to go around and tell me how I make you feel uncomfortable because Im straight. And ill not accuse you of being hostile of course. Then when I explain how straight people also dont feel comfortable around gays, you can start throwing accusations against me b/c Im just a some dumb breeder. Does that sound about right? Straight people have feelings too. We're actually real people, not just some evil heartless bigots that youve been taught to dismiss out of habit.

If I had to pick one group of people I would feel most comfortable talking about this sub with, it would be my gay friends. Hands down.

I am straight so I feel most comfortable around straight people. Again, where I choose to stick my dick for sexual gratification has nothing to do with mens rights.

tl;dr - you keep mentioning youre gay and I keep mentioning it doesnt matter to the MRA movement.

If it's a demographic poll, why not ask all the questions:

  • Race

  • Income

  • Age

  • Chief Concerns (assuming they allow for open ended questions)

  • Marital Status

  • Parents' Marital Status

  • Parent?

  • If yes, custodial parent?

That's all for now.
Edit: added one

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Also perhaps marital status of parents.

[–]burritosandbeer 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

History of abuse?

Were you abused (this includes IPV, Rape, Assault, mental and physical abuse etc): yes, no, unsure.

Gender of abuser: Male, Female, N/A

Earliest age at time of abuse:

If multiple instances or ongoing, include more information in the comment section:

[–]CedMon 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Only if you can choose to not answer and not have your 'non-vote' counted either way.

[–]pcarvious 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So a fourth option, "Choose to not answer" and have it be recorded in a separate column of data?

How about

  • I believe there is only one form of feminism, and everyone else who identifies as feminist is just trying to slap a popular label on their personal ideology

And for the record, I'm against everything of feminism which I have seen in action in my lifetime.

Will you ever marry again? 1. yes 2. no

Are you looking for a significant other? If you are currently attached, if you were single would you be looking? 1. yes 2. no

[–]mikesteane 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with these extra questions. It would be interesting to see if those who have taken the red pill are likely to have more stable marriages. I suspect we are and that questions related to longevity of marriage and attitudes to men's rights will bear this out.

1) What's your gender?

Female

2) Where do you live? (country)

United States

3) When did you first get involved with/hear about the MRM?

That's kind of hard to define. The first time I heard it called the Men's rights movement was well after the first time I involved myself in a rights issue on behalf of a man. First heard the term Father's rights before Men's rights, around 2000 or 2001. I am not sure when I first heard or read the phrase "Men's Rights Movement," but I began posting to reddit's Men's rights sub prior to the current format, under the account name faewillow, linking to blog posts detailing a case of false allegations and malicious prosecution.

How would you describe yourself?

  • Mens activist
  • Feminist
  • Mens ally
  • Egalitarian
  • other

Suggest more options?

[–]palz2015[S] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Got it, sort of made it like a spectrum, with the notch below Feminist being "womens-rights ally"

[–]kratistos 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Are you a pedophile?

  • Yes
  • No
  • Not sure.

Do you hate women?

  • Yes
  • No
  • Not sure

And, more serious,

Which of the following statements are you most likely to agree with?

  • Men and Women are more or less equally disadvantaged
  • Men are more disadvantaged than women
  • Women are more disadvantaged than Men
  • Only men are disadvantaged
  • Only women are disadvantaged

Edit:

Political stand?

  • No idea about good questions

How many people in your social circle have you discussed men's rights issues with? Among those, how many were receptive to the message?

How many people in your social circle are MRA?

[–]kratistos 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good idea, but not very well phrased. Maybe:

With whom do you discuss mensrights:

  • Partner
  • Family
  • Some friends
  • Most friends
  • More

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

1.) Male, straight 2.) USA 3.) Been here a while, not sure why, probably thought about these things more during my brother's divorce. He won SHARED-custody but only because she admitted IN COURT that she was a drug addict and an unfit mother. Otherwise, she would have gotten full custody.

Other stuff:

-White -$150k + -Single/Never married -Mid twenties -No children

[–]palz2015[S] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Added some questions, thanks guys.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

1) What's your gender?

Male

2) Where do you live? (country)

US

3) When did you first get involved with/hear about the MRM?

I heard a small bit on a TV show with a few men's rights activists speaking for about 15 seconds. Before that, I didn't even know there was a men's rights movement, because all they taught in school was women's rights. I felt curious and researched a bit about the topic.

At this time, I was somewhat annoyed at how feminism often blamed the male gender for nearly every problem they had. I didn't want to be demonized for a quality I share with the other ~50% of the world. I didn't want to have teachers treat me like I wasn't taking my academics seriously if I wasn't putting myself down.

So I came here to learn the real truth behind gender issues. I came here because the modern feminist movement is absolutely nothing like the feminist movement 100 years ago, as it demonizes the male gender instead of fighting for the right to own property. I came here because there is in fact, a large array of issues men have to face in their lives. I came here because feminists try to cover those issues up to hurt the male gender. I came here because the men's rights movement is the next step towards gender equality.

1) What's your gender? M 2) Where do you live? (country) Canada 3) When did you first get involved with/hear about the MRM? This year, upon starting university.

ADDED QUESTIONS: What is your sexual orientation? (l/g/b/t/s) G What is your general political stance? (lib/conserv) Lib Libertarian Which of the following statements are you most likely to agree with? Men and Women are more or less equally disadvantaged in western society Men are more disadvantaged than women<----This one Women are more disadvantaged than Men Only men are disadvantaged Only women are disadvantaged Have you ever been sexually abused? NO By a man? By a woman? If you have been abused, what relation (if any) did you have to the rapist? Close family (mother, father, sibling) Family (cousin, aunt, uncle, etc) Friend Stranger (danger)/other How do you describe your activism (if any?): MRA (men's rights activist)<-----This Men's rights ally Egalitarian<----This Women's rights ally Feminist Indifferent

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You really should add a libertarian or min-archist type option. I think this position describes many people in the MRA.

I would also if possible add 1-2 more age categories. Those are fairly broad.

[–]palz2015[S] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Libertarian is a party, I wasn't going to go into country-specific things. But I'll add quasi-anarchist.

[–]Reaperdude97 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Straight, South Asian, Liberal, Men are more disadvantaged, Never sexually abused, I am a MR ally..

[–]fidelbogen -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I would recommend using the word "sex" rather than "gender". The feminists programmed us to say "gender" and it's time to de-program.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 13 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

... Sex and gender are two entirely different constructs.

Sex is whether you have a penis or a vagina, or, in some cases, different chromosomes from male and female altogether.

Gender is the role you take. Most people have gendered roles that match their genitals, but not everyone does.

The word "gender" used to mean "sex" was promoted by prudes, not LGBT activists.

[–]Yosuke_Hanamura 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think fidelbogen's simply upset by the way some people have tried to do things like identifying SIX separate genders. As someone who doesn't really identify as "male" or "female," do I need another gender to identify myself. Personally, while I think men and women are inclined to acting differently (on average), in a society that truly wasn't sexist, the word "gender" would have very little meaning. Six genders...

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Erm, conceptually they are, but linguistically sex and gender are also used as synonyms. As a general rule unless the conversation is regarding the trans community it's not necessary to distinguish them.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, but people should use the term "sex", because it's technically correct. It kind of gets on my nerves when people are afraid of using that term because sex can also mean sexual intercourse. Gasp! I mentioned the unspeakable!

I must get myself to the confessional!

[–]fidelbogen -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
