I found the following links on the evopsych subreddit and thought they were relevant for a science topic here.

The dominant mating pattern throughout human evolution has been serial monogamy with adultery, or extra-pair copulation. The question has been how much that extra-pair copulation occurred and to what extent it resulted in offspring.

Recent large analyses of DNA and ancestry data indicate that extra-pair paternity may be lower than previous estimates over the last five hundred years at a rate of ~1 - 5%. This was also highly related to social role or class: low SES classes were closer to 5%, merchants, farmers, middle and high classes were closer to 1%. It was also predicted by population density, .06 for small villages to 2.3% for cities.

Modern rates of extra-pair paternity may also be significantly lower than previously thought at 1-2%. The rates of historical EPP also seem to be similar across cultures.

The authors here point out that the data does not support evo psych explanations for promiscuity or extra-pair copulation as a strategy for seeking out "good genes." (Related: I posted research a few weeks back that also demonstrated "good genes" were not as closely related to physical attractiveness as popularly believed.)

Either way, these data pose a major challenge to the idea that women routinely ‘shop around’ for good genes by engag- ing in EPCs to obtain genetic benefits for their children [14].
