I really don't like being told what to do or receiving unsolicited advice. Whenever someone tells me to do something or to do something a certain way, my first impulse is to do the opposite. Regarding my life, I like to make my own decisions and have the final say in everything. On top of that, I'm very averse to doing something I don't see a logical reason for doing, or with a method I don't find efficient.
To be sure though, I seek advice and ask people I respect for their input and consider their words carefully. Sometimes I find their advice is the best option, and so I follow it. Sometimes I don't find it optimal, so I do it another way. What matters to me isn't so much that I need to be the best and come up with all the good solutions myself, but that I have the final say in decisions for my life. So to be more nuanced, it isn't all unsolicited advice that I don't like. I'm very receptive towards unsolicited advice, when it is given in a suggestive, non-imposing manner, and when the advisor is PERSUASIVE (so the advice giver speaks in a neutral, logical tone and presents objective reasons for why he thinks the advice is good). Because when he appeals to my judgement, he implies that he isn't imposing his will, and that the final decision lies with me. As I'm wired this way, I'm a person who treats other people in this manner as well (so I don't give people unsolicited advice, when I give advice, I'm also very diplomatic and never downplay their opinions ever).
Another important disclaimer is that I'm very willing to compromise and not do as I want when a decision affects others (e.g groupwork, friendships, etc.) because then it's a matter of considering everyone's preferences.
My question is whether this would be a problem in a Captain-First Mate relationship. I think that the aforementioned diplomatic and persuasive manner of giving advice is an ideal way of treating your SO, and it is similar to the STFU method and simply not nagging and such. But since RPW acknowledges that men and women are different, and the man is to take the lead, how would the man treat the woman? Does he tell her what to do, or does he also persuade her?
Let me mention though that since I chose the man, I have agreed to rely on him to make the final decisions in the big matters. What I'm asking is if he should give advice concerning things that are my responsibility. For example, that he states his expectations of me to begin with is of course mandatory for the relationship. But so long as I'm meeting those expectations, I don't want to be told how to meet them.
Thank you for your thoughts and reflections! This isn't only a sexual strategy question, but the philosophical topics of authority structures, self-reliance and free will have been on my mind for a long time so I'm curious about what you ladies will say!!
