Recently on seddit I've been seeing a lot of hate towards canned openers. Now I'm not talking about openers like "Is your daddy a terrorist, because you're da bomb!". I'm referring to opinion openers and the like. Most of the advice I'm seeing is along the lines of "Be yourself! Just walk up and say 'Hey'". Now I understand that inner game and "being yourself" are very important parts of the game I think that it's missing the point.

The AFCs that come here have been told "Just be yourself" their whole lives and it hasn't done shit for them. They come here to get a fresh perceptive on social dynamics, not to be re-fed the same meaningless phrases they've heard from their parents since they were old enough to notice girls. The guys that come here need a way to start a conversation; a way to spark interest and get some back-and-forth started.

Walking up to a girl and saying "Hey, I'm [name]" is great if you have been sarging enough to learn how to think on your feet, but for a beginner, starting with that is going to leave him with nowhere to go. The people who come here already know how to say hello; they need something more.

Now, I'm not saying that you should memorize every opinion opener from The Game. Of course not, that would never work. What you need to do is find a phrase or a question or a topic that you can say to a group of strangers that will get them talking. But that's not all, you also have to be genuinely interested in what you are asking. This is the most important thing.

I love the "who lies more, men or women" opener because I really like to hear what people think about it. I ask it to all my friends, guys and girls, not just girls i am trying to game. On the other hand, I hate the "Is kissing cheating?" opener because I honestly have no interest in people's answers to that.

The advantage to using an opener you are passionate about is that you already have a lot of energy invested in it and it makes it that much each to keep the conversation flowing until you have enough attraction to change topics. People can tell when you are asking a question you read in a book, but if you really are invested in what you talk about you come across as a much more interesting person and helps build comfort.

I'm sure I'll get some dissenting views but I love to hear what other people think so let's hear it!

tl;dr "Just be yourself" isn't enough, openers work for a reason
