This has to do with comfort versus tension. Building comfort is about making a girl feel safe around you. Talking to everyone, smiling kindly and being charming will do that. Tension is about making a girl feel "unsafe" around you in a sexual way. It makes your attraction to her directly palpable. To do that you would use heavy eye contact, pauses, smirking, etc.

Ideal game should be a mix of the two. If you use too much tension, girls who are at first turned off by you will see that you want to bang and think that any response to you will lead you on. The idea behind a lot of game is building up enough comfort so that even if at first glance she thinks "no," as you talk to her and make her feel comfortable she begins to see the attractive things about you. Women are usually very forgiving of outward appearance if you can make up for it with charm/charisma.

I think the key concept here is "calibration." You may get better results by matching your energy level to the woman's. That's not to say you need to have exactly the same level as her. Usually you have a little higher energy than her. But if you have way too much, or too little energy, it feels weird. Also you can change energy levels, like speaking more slowly and intensely, to change the dynamic.

Match their energy level. If you meet some more out going people, and come off all James Bond, they'll think you're a tool, much in the same way if they're quieter, and there you are blurting out overt sexual jokes. You can bring their energy level up, but it's slow, where as if you want to bring it down, that's easier, and a lot faster (I got that from learning interrogation techniques - the rest isn't relevant to game).

One-on-one situations always seem to work out better when I'm in a low-energy mindstate. The important part is to smile with it, I think that's where your problem is.

I've kinda had the same problem. I didn't always want to be high energy or always low energy because I am not always one of the two, but my state switches.

The key is to be high energy or low energy whenever you feel like it. Probably it is a good idea to start as high energy when you are opening, otherwise they might not develop interest in you. Later it gets easier to chill back and let the others talk and do don't really bother with them, you are the important one, do what you want, concentrate on one person, let them tell you things, be low energy. When you feel like it again chime in and take all the attention for yourself, be high energy again.

I also think it is easier to be high energy at first, thus my explanation of being low energy also got longer.

You will need to do a lot of practising to get this right for yourself. Listen to ThrowawayPUA who pointed you to "calibration".

Sounds to me like when you say you're feeling 'high energy', you're floating on the status you feel in the group, and on the quick positive feedback that comes from a supportive group. Versus when you single someone out you're now relying on only them to provide the positive feedback, and she's not delivering it as quickly.

Mixing both is the best solution. The high energy, charisma is usually what hooks girls and makes them interested in meeting you. Once they are already attracted to you, that's when you try and isolate them from the group and go low-key.

When its more quiet and one-on-one, I tend to use a much deeper, smoother voice (versus screaming over the bar music) that captures her attention and I make very very intense eye contact. The intense eye contact is a good thing; some girls just don't know how to handle it, but most will find it irresistible.

Don't be afraid to use both when you're gaming as being able to be comfortable in both situations is ideal.
