I don't necessarily think he was trying to say its ok. In fact I see something that is complained a lot in here being represented in the painting. A man assaulted by a woman, and her feeling nothing except slight bemusement over it. Just because he painted it, doesn't mean he supports it, and in fact he may have been trying to shine light on the problem and double standard.

I'm all for equal rights - gender, sexuality, race, religion.

I feel embarrassed as a white cis-gender married "male" when I see posts like this.

This picture is by Norman Rockwell, and it's been done a while ago. At the time of the painting, women having power is not at all common. The illustration of women even having the ability to harm a man, or having an "empowered" woman (as signified by superior strength, capable of sustaining harm to a man) is uncommon, and thus becomes "humorous" at that time, and a chic art piece.

In addition to feminism, racial equality was also not very common, and Rockwell drew another painting illustrating a little black girl going to school with tomatoes being thrown at her.

Being an illustrator for a popular magazine, he needed to utilize controversial imagery. We must remember that Rockwell was an artist, and we must remember what time he was in. The feminist movement didn't really happen yet, and thus female privilege and entitlement also didn't really exist yet, meaning men's rights were even less of an issue because there was yet an imbalance.

I do not in any way condone domestic violence or inequality at all regardless of gender, but I just want to be fair and provide some context for this painting.

You saw this in the /r/pics post, and clearly blew shit way out of proportion.

In the thread they were comparing original photos to the images this artist created. In one original photo of the two black children they were just standing there waiting for something, in the artists rendition he portrayed racism by placing 3 sneering kids on the right hand side of them I believe while holding/taunting them with ice cream. It was just showing another side of the photo.

This picture is just a flipside of the 50s/60s, my interpretation was this was set in the 50s, and she finally hit him back presumably giving him a shiner while doing so.

tl;dr Don't get so bent out of shape. Christ.

Nobody is saying it's OK... definitely not me.

But if you're with anyone, of any gender who is violent, how about just leaving the person!?

I don't condone violence, but people who constantly bitch about their GF or BF need to get the hell out of there rather than bitching about it for sympathy.

It's hard to take someone that seriously who voluntarily stays in that situation.
