Honestly, I wouldn't care about this if it weren't for the blatant hypocrisy in our culture.

"women's only" spaces are expanding. Women are being allowed to form clubs, businesses and events that are speficially for women. Meanwhile, men's spaces are being eradicated. Yet we're told that this is "equality"

I couldn't even read through the whole thing. It was incredibly belittling of men. It treated men as if we're all children who need women around to care for us.

No men around to worry about, to protect, to impress, to slow down for.

Wait, what?

Men, historically and currently, are considered the protectors of women.
It's only anecdotal, but every woman I've talked to about it will admit that they try to impress other women or possibly a specific man (husband, boyfriend), not "men."
What does "to slow down for" even mean? Topics of discsussion? Is this seriously implying that men aren't smart enough to keep up with women in a discussion?
I have no idea what she means by "to worry about."

Somewhere, I assume, emails and evites are flying around setting up comparable gatherings of men. What do they do? Talk about the demise of manufacturing jobs? Fatherhood? Things men are good at—like rotating three-dimensional objects in space? I’m sure it’s really fun. You have your steaks and scores, then.

The problem with segregation was addressed in The Simpson (Girls Just Want to Have Sums) segregation enforces stereotypes instead of addressing issues

Sigh, I need more coffee.

I read 90% of her column as a subtle critique of modern feminism in our culture.

And then the last 10% just seemed to end weakly, with no point at all, and no "closure" -- was this a parody of feminism or a triumphant cheer.

I can see people reading it as cheering feminism on, but if so, the first 90% seems to be pretty weak about that.

My conclusion: I need more coffee.

EDIT: I am pretty sure Heffernan is criqituing feminism here. This column is a Swiftian commentary.

Some evidence of that is above. Some is how she mocks "The End of Men" and "Vagina".

The other evidence is reading her other columns where the word feminism appears.

And more evidence is that Virginia Heffernan, a very well known former NY Times reporter, appears nowhere at feministe.us and almost nowhere at feministing.com

My new conclusion: This is a dig at feminism AND I STILL need more coffee.

I guess there are two aspects to this article that need to be considered. The first is the usual degrading of men in its language, though I have seen far worse. I think the author was, from their perspective, trying to be 'equal', but failing badly at it, and pulling out, as so many people do, the false rape statistics as some kind of evidence for the premise.

The second though is on whether spaces segregated by gender are ok. For a very long time, feminism has been saying flat out that they aren't, and has been systematically trying to destoy men only spaces, while building up female only places within its own borders. But now we're at the point where there are more and more women only places, both explicitly, and implicitly through the hostile attitudes of women towards men in those environments. I do see the latter as a huge problem, not because of the idea of women only places in itself, but because of the negative attitude that it perpetuates towards men. More troubling is how many of these women only places are places where men should be a part of too (rape and domestic violence groups, childcare places etc).

I guess I say this because I can't take the same "not caring about the segregation, only the hypocracy of feminism" attitude as some replying. I don't care at all if women want to have women only private events, but while this segregation goes on in far more important aspects of life, we have to be willing to challenge the idea that it's somehow ok.
