I consider myself an amateur historian, I've even done re-enactment. So I've read a lot of books about many areas of history. As far as I'm concerned, I can't see any debate about women's roles as (generally) being subordinate.

I have a very uncomplicated view of the history of gender relations. As people became more domesticated, they started turning more and more on each other and became greedier. They started fighting among themselves, rather than the forces of nature. As a result, society became a much more dangerous place, with men having more social power as a result of their physical strength. I think there were probably a great many women who welcomed protection from their men, and preferred not having some social rights to having to go it alone. Eventually, it became impossible for either gender to stray to far from the roles they were given, both socially and legally.

Men had more power, women had more protection. Do you all see it this way? What's your take on historical gender roles?
