He starts school a year from september, so I've been looking closer at the schools in my area. I know there are quite a few articles about how schools are geared more towards girls so I wouldn't mind some links to articles like that, but what I'm really looking for are more personal opinions and experiences. As men, what would have made you happier/more interested/care more about school? What do you think I can do as a mother to help make sure my son likes school and is in a school environment that is paying attention to him?

edit: Wow, thank you all very much. A lot of you suggested getting him interested in reading, which he already loves so I guess that's another step in the right direction. Some of you also linked me to some great resources, which I really appreciate. Also, a few of you asked where we live, so for future references we're in Ontario, Canada.
