If it is the person's choice, then I see no difference between it and other body modifications.

If it is performed on a baby, then I have a problem with it.

I'm all for circumcision.... IF the person getting circumcised is giving his consent and is old enough for that consent to be considered valid (I.e. I really don't think that a five -year old who says "I want my foreskin gone" understands all of the positive or negative consequences)

The logical argument is that you had no way of knowing beforehand if you would have been glad or not (I'm assuming you were circumcised as an infant.) If you wanted to be circumcised that badly you could always have gotten it done as an adult, by your own decision.

I just had twin boys a couple weeks ago. I don't feel that I-- or my husband-- have the right to make such a permanent, intimate decision for them. Any more than I would hack off my daughter's clitoral hood or labia.

!! WTF? I'm from a country that doesn't mutilate babies' genitals and this notion is incredibly absurd to me. Would you cut any other part of your skin off if a man in a white jacket told you to? If a man in a white jacket said "Hey, it's not really beneficial in any way, but we'd like to cut off your infants eyelids. It's a very "in" look right now." would you go for it?

I'm cut but my kid probably won't be. It's kind of a non-issue for me but theres no reason for me to do it to my kid.

I'm against circumcision. But either way, circumcision rates seem to be dropping. I'm not sure how I feel about making it illegal for religious reasons. I mean, how do you enforce that? Religious Jews will have it done in private, the way they've done it forever. Non-religious Jews will eventually have ceremonial, non-cutting bris. I don't feel comfortable getting government involved. OP, you don't know what you're missing, that's why you're ok with it. Gently stroke the back of your hand with the tips of your fingers. Now do the same on the palm of your hand. Feel the difference? Foreskin contains the same type of nerve endings found on your palm, only more condensed. It also acts as an ejaculatory trigger, helping you last longer and have more control.

I think most people who aren't bothered are the people who have had it done as an infant, if you believe that it's the norm then it won't bother you as much, my ex muslim friend has a similar problem, he aslo doesn't eat bacon, not because it's against his belief but by being told growing up pig meat is dirty, it makes him gag because his view has been twisted to make him think it is disgusting.

Besides the social/political reasoning, there's the medical/sexual reasoning. The part they cut off has a big portion of your nerve endings down there numbing you decreasing the amount of sensation you will receive. For some people, it's so bad, they don't get next to any pleasure because they are cut.

I really have no strong feelings about it - i.e., I am neither glad nor angry that I am circumcised. I don't think parents should choose to circumcise their sons, but I also don't think they should get their ears pierced either. Whether it should be banned (or a crime), I'm on the fence about. I do think it's hyperbole to call it male genital mutilation however. My friend's wife is a pediatrician and encourages parents not to circumcise, so maybe the tide is turning.

Why would you be happy you were circumcised as a baby? What are the upsides? The only one I can think of is that you won't remember the procedure.

If your parents hadn't circumcised, you could still get it done now if you decided that it's what you wanted. All they did was remove your choice when they imposed it on you.

It's like you've won a free vacation to one of two countries and there are two possible ways of giving out the prize

The first way (uncircumcised):

You are told what the countries are and given time to decide which one you'd rather travel to.

The second way (circumcised):

You are forced to go to one of the countries.

Both countries are nice destinations. The people who are forced to go to a certain country will still have a good time, and might even say: "I'm glad I was forced to go to this country, without being forced I may not have chosen this one!" But wouldn't it be better to actual research both countries and decide on your own which you'd rather go to? Some of the people who were forced would be unhappy with their country and know they wouldn't have chosen it.

Many of the people who are happy with their forced country would have been happier if they had gone to the other country. They just never know it because they haven't had the opportunity to learn about the other country. They like where they are, so they assume that being forced was in their interests.

Nope.

I forget how old I was when I was circumcised (5 or 6?), but I spent enough time without that I remember the hassle of keeping everything clean. I find it laughable that there are people who cry about the fact that they were circumcised as a child - to me, it's just a symptom of a deeper psychological issue.

I have zero problem with it, and I'm glad for it. Honestly, anyone here arguing that infant circumcisions are wrong because there is no consent has way too time on their hand. Its the damn child of loving parents, the parents are fully allowed to make their decision.

If that argument holds true, then basically the first 18 years of a childs life are nullified because they can't legally make decisions and this argument states that their parents can't make decisions. So then, who decides?
