Hey guys,
I am currently a university student studying behavioural science, it involves a fair amount of psychology and sociology related units. What I have found during my course of study is that whenever the topic of gender is introduced in a unit, either in the textbook of during a lecture an enormous amount of attention is given to women, and little to no attention is given to men at all.
An example being in one of my current units the following is a line from the textbook “Males have far greater access to educational opportunities than females do” which I find somewhat interesting seeing that well over half of my class is female. I feel I should point out that in my opinion at least, in some areas of the world being female is undisputedly challenging and restricting, such things as strict dress codes or heavy control into their sexual relationships. However I have yet to see any textbooks or even any lectures describing any hardships that males may face during their lifetimes, and often the topic of gender in any textbook or lecture might as well just be called something else, as these topics only ever seem to explore the past/current/future problems of being female across societies.
To be honest it is somewhat unnerving, in past situations I have even spoken to the lecturers about this and they never really seemed to care. I also want to point out that when I ever asked a female lecturer about my issues with the topic of gender I am usually treated coldly, or simply seen as a sexist.
I think the main thing I’m trying to say is I can’t stand how particularly in the units I have taken, there is that no attention is given to males at all, there is no attention given to the problems that males across the world face every day.
Well that’s my little rant over with.
