I'd just make the point "It's scary out there. If it can wait when the girls work at night, then it can wait. Period. Otherwise I want to be compensated for the additional risk I'm assuming. If there's no risk then the girls can take out the trash at night too."

It gives the employer a choice while driving home your point at the same time, in effect forcing them to put their money where their mouth is.

I can't believe I found a subreddit for exactly my disgruntlement! To think I was going to post this on the feminist subreddit: So I'm a college kid who works primarily with other college kids at a self-served frozen yogurt shop. When closing the store for the night all trash must be emptied in the parking lot dumpster around 11pm at night. If there are 2 girls working they do not have to go dump the trash, however if there is at least 1 male working then the trash must be thrown out that night. Talking to my fellow coworker who is gay cried out that the owners are sexist for doing this. I don't find it fair that two females don't have to take the trash out and but guys have to. I understand that there is a possibility that rape or attack can happen but it is still possible that men can be raped or attacked as well. edit: keep in mind also this store is in a heavily surveillanced area with security guards on SEGWAYS! YES SEGWAYS! A very rich place with the average home costing in the millions... When I ask other female coworkers about this, they just laugh and agree in a silent manor its not fair but really don't care. One even joked to me that she could kick anyones' ass and protect me from sex predators...Hell I don't blame them I wouldn't mind less work.

That is definitely an unfair policy. I could see it if you worked in a bad neighborhood with a history of violence, but this seems safer than my suburb next to the police station. I have taken the trash out at night, alone, many a time. Even while pregnant. I'd say write an anonymous letter asking for the policy to be changed, or even modified so that the two girls can go out together. Good luck fighting the good fight! :)

The thing that most irritates people interested in gender issues is double standards. There are a lot of them on this board. It is also the thing that feminists talk about, too. The difference is that while a lot of people, dare I say "most" people, happy to see female stereotypes disappear, few people notice that the male stereotypes are alive and well and supported by both men and women.
