Does politics play a role in Men's Rights, or is it a social issue with only loose correlations?

Anyway, politics is crap, neither party pays much attention to it's purposed cause they simply whore themselves for cash. Blair calls himself a socialist and went into an unnecessary war on what he knew to be no evidence, and now gives talks to Arab kings on peace in the middle east for buckets of gold.

But overall politics should be unrelated to peoples rights.

I do not wish to start an argument, but I am curious how many people feel that political leanings actually affect the Men's Rights movement beyond minor disagreements about actual solutions

I think your political leanings correlate to whether you are a "the feminist movement went too far" MRA or a "females were always on the winning side of a social contract and stopped fulfilling their obligations" MRA (there are others). I'd prefer responsibility comes with freedom instead of divorcing it entirely.

I think men's rights attracts people from different political/social backgrounds, for different reasons. For the most part, we can find many issues to agree on; it's what the fix is where our social background comes into play.

That test shows me as a slightly left learning libertarian and not far from the center.

Having mras of all political persuasions is a great strength and advantage however, some are too blinded by their political dogma to see that.

I have a very similar stance to you.

As to the question: Politics should play a part in some of the debate. While there are a lot of thinks we agree on, a lott of the r/MR people fundamentally disagree on certain matters due to our political leanings. (Me and Demonspawn for example disagree on an enormous number of things.)

But there are a lot of areas where it shouldn't. Politics shouldn't affect any discussion on rights whatsoever.

I thought it would be interesting to take the test as a feminist. Both times I came up with far left, 8-9, and slightly to mid libertarian. The economic leftist idea made sense. The libertarian leaning aspect did not. I see feminism as authoritarian, very much in favor of government control, especially for men. The questions just don't seem to capture the ideas of mandatory arrest policies, alimony, and restrictions on civil liberties for the accused.

I believe that MR is a human rights issue that isn't limited to any political leaning. Every political group has certain beliefs about the rights of people. Having many rights or few is another issue altogether. It is just my belief that whatever rights any group accepts as human rights, both sexes should be equal in them, and that is what MRAs are for.

I was reading an interesting article in Miller McCune yesterday which posited that one's politics are simply an extension of one's basic form of moral reasoning (it was more complicated that that but still). With that in mind, I think politics become inextricable from anything related to morality...and MR is definitely related to morality. You can't get rid of politics, and they will always play a role. Also unavoidable is that a group will take on those traits (like basic moral reasoning) which are present in the majority...which will likely make those in the minority feel uncomfortable.

With all of that being said, we shouldn't explicitly tie the MRM to any one of these things. It shouldn't tie itself to liberalism, or conservatism, etc. Keeping it issues-based is a strength in many ways, and will come in handy later, once being an MRA is less of a taboo.

side note: you should all read that article...it was called "My Morals Are Better Than Yours" and it was by Tom Jacobs. I don't see it on their site yet, but it should be in a few days and it's very interesting.

Closer to Ghandi and the Dalai Lama. More left and libertarian than anything. Interesting. Some of the questions were pretty loaded, though.

Politics? Not too much. Conservative/Liberal split? Entirely.

Why? Because while we may see similar problems, we don't have anything near the same solution. If we want men's rights to be anything more than a gathering place to bitch and whine, we need to have at least a similar solution.

And, frankly, as far as conservatives see it, liberals are not providing a solution. They are simply providing more of the same: moral hazard benefiting women which caused the problems we are facing today.

Of course politics plays a role in men's rights. Government is probably the primary force utilized against men to deny them their rights. Divorce, child support, father's rights, war deaths, domestic violence law, the criminal sentencing disparity, education, prison rape, VAWA, the double standard regarding male and female genital mutilation, all of these are influenced by politics, and much of these problems would be ameliorated if we had less government intrusion in our lives.

So the role of government in our lives is extremely important to men's rights. And thus, politics is extremely important to men's rights and the lives of men and their families. It is the state that women use as an instrument to remove husbands from their lives and their children's lives and put them in prison to be raped for failure to pay up. These aren't "political squabbles" as you said, they are extremely important discussions. A squabble is a "noisy petty quarrel", and discussion of these issues is anything but.

That political spectrum test is bunk. The real question is how much government you think is necessary. Democrats, Republicans (other than Ron Paul), socialists, fascists all believe we need big government, while libertarians, anarchists, and constitutional conservatives believe we need limited government or none at all. A person who claims to be for big government on economic issues but small government on social issues is either naive or a liar, because it doesn't work that way: you either have big and powerful government or you don't. If you want never-ending war, a police state, and the continued erosion of men's rights, then big government is your answer. If you want peace, freedom, and a meritocracy where women are not given special treatment, then small government is your answer. In the US, this means if you vote for a mainstream establishment Republican or Democrat (Romney, Gingrich, Santorum, or Obama), you are voting for fascism and continued erosion of men's rights and the family. On the other hand, if you vote for a libertarian (Ron Paul, Gary Johnson), you are voting for freedom and getting the government out of the business of enforcing feminist anti-male policies.

In summary, if you ignore politics when discussing men's rights issues, what you are really doing is ignoring potential solutions. Men's rights activists look for ways to solve our problems, and that includes examining politics and the effect they have on men's rights issues. It also includes taking a hard look at presidential candidates in the US and examining how their policies would affect our ability to work toward solving men's rights issues. For example, if the powers that be are successful in their attempts to censor the internet (SOPA for example), rest assured sites like Reddit and A Voice for Men will be potential targets.

So what does this means for this particular sub-reddit? Allow political discourse. Allow political submissions. Allow the users to decide whether submissions are relevant to men's rights with the voting system. It's that easy.

I think that the major political aspect of mensrights is that a man must never vote for a woman. For anything. Ultimately males have been marginalized in this society and the only way to start reversing that is to first realize that female political and economic power is the enemy.
