When I first got to Japan, I did the nice thing and tried to give up my seat to the pregnant/elderly. "Dozo", I would say. "Daijoubu", they would say. And thus started the dance of Japanese manners. It would go on for a while, me offering the seat and them denying it. Eventually I woul just stop asking them and leave the seat empty. Sometimes they would sit. Most times, someone else who gets on at the next stop would take it. It didn't take me long before I would just give up and not try at all.

TL,DR: They probably wouldn't have taken the seat anyway.

You know, I do think it's polite to give up your seat to someone significantly less able-bodied than you. Including very pregnant women.

However, were there an equal number of able-bodied women on the train? Why didn't any of them offer to give up their seats? Or was everyone else male?

The real issue here isn't that they were pregnant.

It is that only the men were expected to give up their seats.

The comments are very amusing.

When you read the Japanese comments (within the article), they sound like something a bunch of Western men would say if a man made a complaint about rudeness. The sentiment is basically a gender neutral "man-up, stop whining".

When you read the Western comments (after the article), they talk about how the Japanese men are misogynists rushing in to defend other men. It's amazing how comfortable the west is with blatant female gender loyal, yet how frightened the west is of male gender loyalty.

I'm curious, though. If they had given up the seats, isn't fair enough to say that they were being sexist? After all, the only reason that the seats would be given up is over gender.

Similarly, as mentioned in the article, someone points out that Japanese men are generally tired after working a long day at their jobs. I'm sure they deserve those seats far more than, what appears to be, fun loving teenage girls.

In Canada, people are required to give up their seats on public transit to the disabled and pregnant, and generally there are areas for parents (including men) who have strollers or small children.

In this case, there are more people than just these men at fault for not giving up their seats.

The women who took the pictures ARE probably cunts, but I was giving up my seat for the elderly/disabled/pregnant etc since I was 5 (and I'm a millenial). Maybe my parents drilled it into me or what not, but there was never a time that it was acceptable to NOT offer my seat to someone in that position. Maybe they had shit parents, or a shit culture, but don't pretend like the men are innocent victims. I generally agree with MensRights, but not really this time.
