My mother is... 64 years old, though she'd likely kill me for stating that aloud. We were having dinner last night and there was a piece about this on whatever special-interests program she had on.

When they stated the disparity in sentencing, the first words out of her mouth were: "her ass should be in there just as long and then some."

Made me proud.

Can anyone explain the disparity in sentencing to me? Emphasis mine in the quote below:

And the icing on the cake is she gets to keep the kid. If this had been a single father with his girlfriend, and the GF duct taped the kid, he would get the 36 months and the GF would get 10 days, and he would never see the kid again.

No offense, but 3-5 years for duck taping a toddler to the wall? Unless they did it for days or something, then maybe... People get less for killing, raping, violent assault, etc...

I'm thinking the reason why the judge landed such a huge sentence on this guy is because he felt that the father was an extremely bad influence, perhaps even dangerous, to the child's future health. Pretty judgmental imo... So at least the guy should be thankful he isn't black, then they would've just thrown away the key.

Where the light sentence for the mom came from baffles me though. Women are just as likely as men to injure/kill their children... In fact I think it's the case that women are more likely to kill their children? Imagine the case now. 18 year old mom with no financial support from the child's father. I can't tell from my position whether the kid was better off with the father or not.

Think of it this way. If a girl plotted to kill someone with a man, and the man carried out the deed with the girl as company, then imagine the same sentences[or proportion thereof] being delivered. It wouldn't happen. So really, this is a clear case of women disproportionately benefiting because they are the mother.

This happened to my brother when he was 5, I was 3. Our twin cousins (teen boys) were babysitting us for the night. They grabbed my brother, tied him to a chair with duct tape. Then they hit him repeatedly, with a stuffed animal that had a wind-up music box in it. I remember watching and laughing and laughing until I saw that his face was red. 4 year olds don't understand much I guess. :(
