25% of all women in the WORLD? Yes, I'd believe it. I don't think rapes are evenly distributed through all different societies, cultures and socioeconomic strata.

I don't know the percentage of women who have been raped, or who will be raped. Often "rape" is defined differently in different contexts, and surveys can give odd or hazy definitions to skew the results one way or the other. Also, many women who have been raped do not recognize their rape as a rape, because their rapist was a friend or partner. On the other side of things, many women who have had sex with a man and then later thought better of their poor judgment think that they have been raped. This topic is just so difficult to define.

What constitutes as rape? Where is the line? Is it just forced penis/vagina intercourse? Is forced anal intercourse rape? What about oral? Penetration with the hands? Unwanted groping? Does it have to be violent, or is it still rape if the woman was coerced or blackmailed into sex? The people making these surveys seem to be inconsistent, and victims of rape, both men and women, have different opinions as to what is rape and what is not.

That said, I wound not find it hard to believe that the figure you gave could possibly be accurate (I wouldn't accept it as fact until I saw the study). Rape is more common than people realize. You mentioned that you know many women and none of them have been raped - you do not know this. As a rape victim, I can say that it's very difficult to tell anyone, and you're much more likely to tell a friend who has experienced something similar, and much less likely to tell a friend who you perceive to be insensitive to rape.

date rape, SO rape, stranger rape. Think also rape is not just penis to vagina, but also penis to mouth. I have a friend who in highschool, she was alone with a friend in a park, when he shoved her down and forced her to give him oral sex. She never talked about it except with her twin until years and years later when we all were having drunken girl talk. Even then, the word 'rape' wasn't used, even amongst us closest friends. She was embarrased, hurt, confused, young.. and she wasn't the only one in that group who had a similar story.

It is not so easy to conduct studies about rape. People usually do not define their expierience as rape so they have to ask different question. Often when one read such statistics you also hear something akin to "1 in 4 women will be victim of rape / attempted rape" so rape and attempted rape are mixed together. So you really have to look at the statistic. You have to know their definition. What also helps is to compare male and female rape numbers (also male numbers are not out there that often). To toss another statistic out:

•A 2005 study conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, on San Diego Kaiser Permanente HMO members, reported that 16% of males were sexually abused by the age of 18.

That is 1 in 6. And frankly a lot of it depends on the definition.

The statistic is more reasonably that one in four women will suffer an attempted sexual assault, whether it's rape or a more mild sexual assault. When I'm at home, I can go through my history and pull up a bunch of stats that show it really isn't that hard, when extrapolated over the woman's entire lifetime. Even if only .35% of women are assaulted per year, if you stretch that out over seventy years, that's 25% of women. It's not one in four per year, or anything, just over their lifetime.

You know a lot of women. I guarantee some of them have been raped. Most people don't talk about their rapes, which is part of the problem for measuring them. There are four rapes amongst my female friends I know about. One of them, I am one of three people in the world who knows, and that's only because I had dated the guy that did it. All of them only told a handful of people, and didn't report them. I certainly don't talk about my grey rape.

Rape victims often don't act like rape victims, or wear signs. It's shameful, so you pretend it never happened.

whenever you hear a statistic that surprises you, check the credibility of the source, and ask questions about the women in the study. 1 in 4 prostitutes? id believe that. 1 in 4 western women? no way.

If this statistic takes into account places like Iraq, Afghanistan, South Africa, DR Congo etc and then averages them with the 1st world then sure, it sounds accurate.

If we were just to look at South Africa, DR Congo etc the % would be MUCH higher.

If we were just to look at 1st world nations the % would be much lower.

Ah, but every feminist knows countless women who've been raped. They have all had life experiences of this nature that somehow have eluded the rest of us.

As for the one-in-four: it's a concoction of an advocates' imagination, the stardust wishfulness of feminists with extreme victim fetishes. What can aptly be called the sexual grievance industry tells us that one-in-four women in their lifetimes are victims of rape or attempted rape. Or is it one-in-three? Or is it one-in-four college women? Or is it one-in-four Freshmen college women before Thanksgiving break? Or is it one-in-six women in general? Or is it one-in-seven women in general? That's the joke: pick a single digit number and you'll find some "support" for it among the politicized purveyors of misandry. It doesn't seem to bother these zealots that they can't even get their stories straight. (Nor do they seem to notice that that there is one hell of a difference between one-in-three women overall, one-in-four college women before Thanksgiving of Freshman year, and one-in-seven women overall.) And when you try to reconcile their claims about underreporting with the above numbers, which is also a moving target, your head starts to spin.

The idea, the very idea, that 1/4 of the women in this country, that is 1/8 of our total population, have gone through the most traumatic experience one can go through, short of death, is simply ridiculous. it is, as many people before me have said, simply a definitional problem.

How do we define rape? how do the women 'raped' define rape? would they call what they went through rape? how did the people that DID the studies define rape? what questions did they ask the 'raped' women to find out if they were raped?

there is also the question of 'attempted' rape. what is an attempt at rape? obviously if someone breaks into someone's home and tries to force his/herself upon the residents of the house, and fails and is overpowered or repulsed, it is attempted rape. someone attempted to rape someone else. But what if someone's boy/girlfriend is drunk and frisky, and decides to 'force' him/herself upon a partner who simply isn't in the mood? what if there is no alcohol involved?

Any study that claims that a certain percentage of people had something happen to them is subject to these kinds of questions; something many feminists do not realize. Sociology, Psychology, and Gender Studies are inexact sciences by definition, but when someone in these fields decides to make a scientific claim like this, with studies and research and supposed support, it must be scrutinized.

The one-in-four statistic is ridiculously high as well. Detroit, one of America's most violent cities, had about 2400 reported murders, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults per 100,000 inhabitants in 2006. that is about 2.4% for all violent crimes. if there were 50,000 women living in Detroit, 12,500 would need to have been victims of rape or attempted rape in their lifetime. if we assume that all of the violent crimes reported in 2006 were rapes, and that all rape victims were women, it would take 5.2 years of 6.5 rapes per day in Detroit to reach this level.

Obviously my use of statistics were wrong. it is not per year, it is in their lifetime, and i assumed way too much. I just wanted to give you a idea of the staggering magnitude of 1-in-4.

Another common claim is that 1-in-4 college women will be raped during their time in college. this is equally ludicrous. Our nation has nearly 10 million undergrads, 5 million of which are women and, if this statistic is correct, 1.2 million of whom will have been raped during their four-year term of college. that is 821 attempted rapes per day, mind you.

You don't really need a good argument. They do. The ones making a claim need to back it up.

I doubt 25% of women will be raped, because I haven't seen any good evidence or studies supporting it.

If I feel like joining the "making shit up" party, it does seem too high. But that intuition is pretty meaningless.

I think its a safe bet that 25% of the girls you know have at least at one point in their life been so drunk that they do not remember what happened to them for a few hours.

Also, if this statistic is taking into account the worldwide population there are places with very high populations greater than that of the US with extremely high rape rates = africa.

The stat of 1-4 is not actually rape... It is actually 1-4 are sexually assaulted. But it has been through the blender of modern feminism and becomes rape.

The stat comes from an old survey that included things like a pat on the backside, unwanted advances, rape and I beleive even someone of the opposite sex who stared and made a girl "feel uncomfortable".

So yes, 1-4 have been sexually assaulted gets turned into rape very quickly. But it actually included things such as being 12 and a boy wanted to kiss and she did not. An unwanted pat on the backside during a dance, even a bad stare was lumped in there.

And so if you put rape into that stat of "sexual assault" and then mix in fairly innoculous but annoying things that happen in life, well sure 1-4 are "assaulted" and since "assaulted MUST = rape there ya go.

As a sideline, being a guy I have been "assaulted" many times but I am dealing with it rather well...

It's not actually "1 in 4 raped in their lifetime." It's "1 in 6 sexually assaulted in their lifetime." Sexual assault is much different than rape. If someone walks by a woman and slaps her in the butt as they pass each other, that would be sexual assault. The feminist belief is that all unwelcome sexual advances -- from staring to physical penetration -- are on a continuum that culminates in rape. So to them, sexual assault and rape are essentially the same. That is why you get these inflated statistics.

If you look at the actual studies that they cite, it turns out what is happening is that not only do they lump rape victims in with sexual assault victims, but they also lump in children who are victims of molestation -- and the perpetrators of molestation of children could be male perps or female perps. So they get this massive number of child molestation victims, statutory rape victims, women who report being coaxed into sex, pressured into sex, thrown on the bed before consenting, thrown on the bed without expressing consent, consenting at the beginning of sex but not halfway through it, and actual full-on rape -- and from that they extrapolate that 1 in 6 women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. The "in their lifetime" phraseology is important to note, because that gives them the right to mine the numbers of child molestation and statutory rape victims for cases to pump up their statistics so that they'll get to the 1-in-6 number. They'll never tell you about the substantial number of women who commit statutory rape against underage children, but these female-perpetrated sexual assaults will also be factored in to the 1-in-6 figure; nevertheless, despite the number of female perpetrators that get factored in to this figure, the impression that people will form in their minds is that all of the perpetrators are male, and that all of the incidents were full-on-rape of adult women, and that by male perpetrators.

But remember, this figure is not necessarily describing rape. It's describing sexual assault. Stare at a woman? Make her nervous in some way? Ask her for sex after she says no, and even abide by her second refusal? It's all counted as sexual assault. Once they have the 1-in-6 figure, it's not too far of a stretch for non-discerning people to conflate that into 1-in-6 women being a victim of rape (not just sexual assault) in their lifetime.

Maybe in South Africa but saying that i know two girls who have been "raped" about 50 times between them when a guy who took them on a date got them back to his house and he felt a bit of skin while they were making out. I also have a god sister and brother who were raped (well molested) by a stepdad after he caved in their real dads skull and most of his teeth with his mates when daddy got home from a tour in Afghanistan to find his whore of a wife had move him in behind their fathers back. The whore mum was raped also but I don't really care for her as you may have realised.
