Apologies in advance if this comes across as a ramble, these thoughts aren't exactly completely coherent. I've been doing some thinking lately about feminism and its negative effects. Specifically why feminism has become the way it currently is.
Most of this sub would probably agree with the statement that feminism is the way it is because of feminists themselves. But I recently started to wonder if modern culture may have played a part in why modern feminism has become the way it is .
Modern western politics, and to an extent culture, have also become increasingly polarized with an us vs them mentality going on an the middle ground disappearing at an alarming rate. This mirrors feminism a lot, not just in the usually "if you believe in gender equality then you're a feminist" but also in the whole anyone who criticizes feminism for any reason is a misogynist.
Not just feminism but also the left has a whole has gone the same way where it has largely rejected its previous focus on class issues almost entirely in favor of modern identity politics and has thrown aside its previous values like gender equality for a more group based morality where it matters more what group you a part of and not what you do. Which I think may have also come as a result of the modern tribalism.
Also the culture of millennials and Gen Z (my generation) is one that has very little respect for most of the things valued by previous generations due to perceiving them as the source of most of their economic and social issues (which isn't entirely wrong). It has also become more nihilistic and negative (in my opinion) than the previous generations. They also make up the most vocal feminists and are more likely to be left leaning. Which might explain why the previous values of the "old left" were chucked aside so easily.
Which made me think that maybe a lot of modern feminist behavior has sort of occurred due to feminism basically just absorbing the values of the culture around it and not entirely due to feminists themselves. Now this isn't to imply that feminists aren't responsible for their own beliefs and actions but that it might be more complex than some of us might've thought at first.
So what do you think, do you think the negative aspects of feminism are due to feminists, due to modern culture or something else entirely?
