So recently there was an AskReddit thread about male suicide which generated a lot of discussion around here.
There are of course many factors that play into this. Including the unique pressures placed on men to succeed (in order to provide for a family), problems associated with divorce, with child custody, and the fact that society doesn't care as much about men who struggle in society.
All of these are problems that need to be addressed and for which I would like to see more advocacy about.
Another factor though is social isolation. As people get older, their friends start becoming more and more distant. We get busy with life and our demands at work leave us with less time and energy to hang out and socialize.
Not to mention that many men are demonized and ostracized as "creeps" and sometimes even as "incels", which can also lead to social isolation.
So while it might seem fairly small, one thing you can do is call up an old friend and see how they're doing. Something as simple as a phone call or a few text messages can help out tremendously.
Be the type of person who offers support and is sympathetic in a way that we wish the rest of society was.
That kind of change can start with us. It doesn't require political advocacy or anything like that. All it requires is picking up your phone. Something that many of us probably have in our hands right now as we browse Reddit π.
