Well TV in general has expressed a distaste for hiring even average-looking actors for decades now. That’s why people are shocked when they learn that the actors who played famous “old” characters from the 70s, 80s and 90s were only in their early-to-mid 30s when they did the roles.

So you do what you gotta do to turn a hot girl into an “ugly” character. The alternative is taking some legitimately ugly girl and making her the butt of jokes. Unless your show is going for a Greater Message, that’s a while other can of worms. Also, TV isn’t supposed to be reality.

Yes, of course it's wrong. It's a fantasy for ugly girls. "Maybe if I just made four superficial changes, men would love me and I'd be one of the popular girls."

It's just a female version of getting in an accident involving radioactive sludge and becoming a superhero instead of a cancer patient. It's wish-fulfillment.

I mean they're selling a fantasy lol, it's not always supposed to be realistic, the same way that more than likely the geek isn't going to get the super hot girl, 30 bad guys aren't going to fire hundreds of rounds of machine gun clips at me and I'm going to come out not hit,etc.,

Now they could do the movie about the fat kind of decent looking chick who a lot of the guys use for practice, but ironically the script for that might be even thinner

It’s what TV is - it’s never real world. Unattractive wouldn’t make as much $$$. It’s meant to be a fantasy / an escape from reality.

They instead hire a beautiful actress and it doesn't translate.

Like how they will hire size 8 actresses for "fat" roles and wonder why half the country has body dysmorphia.

I don't think that's as much of an issue. I find any excuse to look at hot chicks to be worth the suspension of disbelief.

I think what's more harmful is how pretty much no romance movie accurately portrays how modern women date. It's always one, MAYBE two, guys vying for her attention and she only interacts with them. IRL she is talking to 10 other dudes, half of whom have fucked her, while Prince Charming tries to win her heart.

Makes for a more...visceral picture.

But that's not aesthetically appealing. That's why guys (a lot of them neckbeards) will whine at how ugly Western video games made women vs how cute Japan makes women/girls in video games.
